It was Cross at Morleigh! South West Off Road Motocross Championships Round 11 – Race Report and Results

by adminAugust 9, 2019

The South West Devon Mxc hosted round 11 of the 2019 Moto-Logic South West Off-road Championship.
With the weather doing magical things as it does in Devon usually, the track was heavily watered from the rain the night before, but as the sun rose over the pristine circuit we were granted with a perfectly prepped circuit to give us some great racing for the day.

The Seniors race 1 was the first gate drop and it was Carl Fuchs who grabbed the holeshot and lead, but hot on his tail was Gareth Townsend looking to add to his win tally for the 2019 season. Townsend made the pass on lap 2 and kept his focus to take the win from Fuchs in 2nd. Mark Relland was on a charge and took 3rd aboard the Honda. Reagan West secured 4th place from the pressure of Dan Bradley in 5th close behind.

Race 2 and it was Gareth Townsend out front, but the pressure was being applied by Joe Philips just behind, until he managed to make a break for it and create a 3 second gap to take the win from Philips. Mark Relland took another solid 3rd from Fuchs who had another good ride for 4th at the line, fighting off the challenges from the hard-charging Kyle Breslan in 5th who also posted the fastest lap of the race on lap 6 of 8.

Race 3 went to the line and Townsend was all fired up and wanted that 3/3 wins, but Fuchs was having a great day and launched out the gate again to lead. Townsend made his way to the front of the pack again but a mistake cost him in the later stages of the moto and allowed Breslan to take the lead and the win. Townsend regained himself back to 2nd with Fuchs 3rd. Josh Day and Jon Jones were locked in a battle for 4th with Day just getting the better of Jones for the positions.

The first Expert race of the day saw the JD Racing KTM of Leigh Williams take the holeshot, and tried to make a break for it. But coming through the pack at a fast pace was Andy Bushin who took to the front of the pack and took the win from Robbie Cross in 2nd who had hard battles through the pack all Moto long. Darren Toy was chasing the pack and pulled a fantastic 3rd place finish from Harry Lawrence in 4th and Paul Vallance making a return to racing in 5th.

Race 2 was just as exciting as race 1, but this time Cross was determined that he was going to be victorious and did just that with a fantastic start to finish win with a 37 second gap from Ross Parkinson who charged hard all race for a solid 2nd. Bushin was 3rd, and Toy finished 4th after defending the pressures of Aaron Austin in 5th.

Race 3 with it all to play for, was set to be a cracking one, and Leigh Williams on the JD Racing KTM took to the front, but after Cross applied the pressure he made a move and took the lead again to pull a convincing 45 second gap for the win. 2nd went to Bushin who held off Parkinson at the line for 3rd. Williams would eventually finish 4th just ahead of the AJ Gibbons Honda Pilot Ben Gibbons.

The Junior Elite race 1 took off the gate and it was Justin Wood on the KTM who took to the front by the end of lap 4. The old guys rule KTM of Michael Brailey was there and took the lead along with the win with Wood in 2nd still applying the pressure on the last lap. Lawrence Watkins was locked in a battle with Danny miller and both crossed the line with less than a second between them for 3rd and 4th and Ethan Pringle 5th

Race 2 and this time Brailey was the one who wanted to dominate the group, but Jack Mathews was trying hard to get his first win of the day with the two battling all race, but it was Brailey who triumphed with the win. Mathews would finish 2nd, Wood 3rd, Watkins 4th and Kevin Pengelly had a fantastic ride at his home circuit for 5th.

Race 3 and it was Ian Legg out at the front of the pack and looked to have had it in the bag until Brailey and Mathews cut the gap Legg had worked up. Brailey took the lead and pushed away at the front of the pack until a mistake in the latter stages of the race saw the leader go down and Mathews take the lead along with the win. Brailey finished 2nd, Legg was 3rd who held of the challenges of Josh Farleigh in 4th and Pringle 5th.

The Junior Open race one went to the line and it was Tristian Lethaby who bagged the holeshot and pulled a good gap. But in the later stages he was being chased by the pack and Michael Rich who eventually took 2nd just behind the winner Lethaby. Martin Wherry had a solid ride in 3rd who just got the better of Sam Andrews in 4th with Adrian Toy on the Ktm in 5th.

Race 2 left the line and it was the Husqvarna of Wherry who took to the front and made a break for the win just in front of Rich again in 2nd. Lethaby made his way up the field to finish 3rd ahead of Toy in 4th and the Bossman of AJ Gibbons racing Andy Gibbons in 5th with a consistent ride.

Race 3 was a cracking start for Lethaby who took the holeshot but Wherry, Rich and Ryan Hoskins were all there to make a pounce on the leader with the results still all up for grabs, but Lethaby kept his cool and took another solid win from Hoskins who had pressure from Rich in 3rd and Wherry 4th. Andrews managed to come through the field after a poor start and secured 5th at the line.

The future stars in the Youth 9-14 class were all revved up and ready to go as Kyran Nichols was the man to watch as he took the front of the pack mid way through the race and notched up another win to his growing tally this year. Sam Napier took a commanding 2nd place from Sam Veale in 3rd Jay Platt was 4th just ahead of Ryan Bates in 5th.

Race 2 again it was Platt who took to the front of the pack where he stayed yet again until Nichols closed the gap on the leader on lap 5 to take the lead for the remainder of the race and win, Platt 2nd, Sam Veale 3rd, Napier 4th, Bates 5th.

Race 3 looked liked it was gonna be a Hat-trick of wins for the rising 85cc star Nicholas as he took to the front but on lap 5 Platt was there and took over at the front to notch up his first win of the day from Nichols in 2nd, Sam Veale 3rd, Napier 4th and young Charlie Veale having a great last race of the day for 5th.

The club would like to thank the landowners along with the Marshall’s, first aid and committee members who ran a superb meeting.

The next round now moves to Whiteway Motopark again for the final time this year which will include the trophy mx of Counties team event on the August the 11th where we will see who can triumph in their respective groups.
