Fourth in Belgium as British youngsters show talent and grit! Coupe De L’Avenir – Report and Results

WP

The Team GB Under 21 Motocross squad battled hard at this weekend’s Coupe De L’Avenir (Under 21 MXON) in Belgium in wet and heavy conditions to just fall short on the overall and class podiums, but one thing that certainly wasn’t lacking, was effort, determination and some good old fashioned team spirit.

With a full-on weekend of racing under their belts, Dave Garland’s young chargers certainly came away from the soaked circuit with a great experience in the Moto bank, and loads learned as they all look to progress their Motocross careers.

Each and every rider throughout the weekend had their moments, and Charlie Richmond certainly had his in the final moto of the 65’s, coming from almost last to sixth, and coupled with his seventh in the first race would finish fifth overall. Freddie Gardiner had an abundance of speed, but was lacking in the luck department but never gave up posting a 9-11 scorecard for 9th overall. Brandon Buckley rounded out the 65cc trio and rode his heart out in a talent stacked field to finish 19th and 23rd. As a team, they would finish just off the box in fourth beating some great nations in the process. Well done guys!

Arai Elcock showed he has the speed to mix it with the best kids in Europe coming away with a 7-24-9 scorecard for 10th overall in a class where the results were all over the shop. Mackenzie Marshall dug deep in every moto and churned out a 19-16-22 scorecard. Jake Randall saved his best for last coming home in an incredible eighth in the third and final moto with the team finishing in 5th.

Based on qualifying many had their eyes on a podium position for the Open team. Taylor Hammal looked a class act with 6-4 from his last two moto’s but a mechanical issue dropped him to 34th in the first moto for 14th overall. Joel Rizzi railed his 125 to finish 12-16-11 for 13th overall. Michael Ellis was in the mix in every moto and some better starts would have made a huge difference to him, but a 8- 12-14 result sheet would see him finish 9th overall in a class field of Euro racers.  The Open team would also just miss out on the podium finishing in fourth behind Belgium but ahead of France.

As a whole, the squad would finish a superb fourth overall, but as much as a podium is always the goal, the experience gained from the riders is priceless, and they all showed they have what it takes to race with the best and they all proved more than worthy to represent their country.

Well done to Dave, the riders, parents, sponsors and everyone involved.
