First, second and fourth for Greenfield Dirt Track at Peterborough – Feature Team Report

by adminMay 22, 2019

The three riders of the Greenfield Noyes Camp team, the Spaniards Gerard Bailo and Ferrán Sastre and the Brit Toby Hales, and in that order, finished first, second and fourth in the second round of the Indian Motorcycles Championship of Flat Track, part of the MCN Festival of Motorcycling at Peterborough.

Fans enjoyed a spectacular battle at the front that saw visiting American hot shot Johnny Lewis and Sastre rubbing bars and elbows while Bailo stalked the two leaders and waited for his chance.

When Sastre managed to push passed Lewis on the inside, both riders ran wide leaving the door open for Bailo who led for a lap until a fall downfield brought out the red flag. With two thirds of the programmed laps completed, the race was not restarted, giving Bailo the win with Sastre and Lewis close behind.

The win for Bailo places him first in the points table followed by Sastre (always on the podium so far with a third in Kings Lynn and now a second in Peterborough) and by Gary Birtwistle, winner of the first round in Kings Lynn and sixth in Peterborough. Sastre and Birtwistle are tied on points, six back of Bailo and with five races yet to run. Toby Hales placed fourth, after a complicated weekend with his Kawasaki, in front of British racer Rob Mear (Honda).

Our instructors at the Noyes Camp lead not only the British series with Bailo, but also the Indian Motorcycle European Championship (also organised by DTRA) with Sastre, winner of the Hells Race in Lelystad (NL) two weeks ago.

The next race for the Greenfield-Noyes Camp Kawasaki team will be the third round of the British Nationals, at the Greenfield TT Track in Lincolnshire, GB on June 8th and 9th.

1. Gerard Bailo (Kawasaki Greenfield-Noyes Camp)

3. Johnny Lewis (Kawasaki) *
4. Toby Hales (Kawasaki Greenfield-Noyes Camp)
5. Rob Mear (Honda)
*Johnny Lewis (USA) participated as guest rider of the DTRA.

George Pickering – Team Owner Greenfield Dirt Track:

“We’re really pleased with how the evening went. The track had different dirt on it, so all of our notes from previous race meetings at Peterborough went out of the window and we were chasing the perfect set up all evening. There had been a lot of rain during the day, and the track changed a lot throughout the evening and was much faster than in previous years. We feel like we adapted well to the conditions though, we continued to learn and ended the meeting with great results. Thank you to all of the guys who worked hard over the weekend. We’re now looking forward to the next round of the Dirt Track Riders Association, on our very own Greenfield TT course.”

Gerard Bailo #17:

“I’m very happy. From the first moment on track, I had very good feeling with the bike setting even though the surface was still somewhat wet from the rains. The track held up well. I was able to make the best time in qualifying and win my heat and semi and that let me choose a good grid position for the final. I didn’t get a good start but I was able to recover little by little, catch the leaders and take the win. I hope to continue like this in the upcoming races. Thanks to all of my sponsors.”

Ferran Sastre #215:

“I came in after winning the Hells Race feeling strong and confident. The storm left us without free practice and we had to go directly into the two qualifying sessions and, with very little time between sessions, we did not have time to work on suspension and gearing set-up. Even so, I was third quickest. In the final Gerard and I chased Johnny down, but he was very hard to pass and very good at shutting the door. I finally saw an opportunity to overtake and got by but we both ran wide and that let Gerard through and then, on the next lap the red flag came out. The race was far from settled when stopped and I would have preferred the race to finish with a checkered flag instead of a red one. It was a positive experience and I am already looking forward to the next race and I hope to maintain or increase my lead in the European Championship.”

Toby Hales #1:

“It was a tough weekend. To start with I qualified 4th behind Johnny, Bailo and Ferry which put me into the 4th heat race, which I won and led from the start! But during the heat race the bike had a small issue that wasn’t going to be sorted by the semi final, so I had to use one of George’s CRF 250 hire bikes in the semi final, I got 3rd in that race because I couldn’t quite catch Bailo and Rob Mear. That gave me 5th pick for the final so I was on the second row, luckily I could ride the 450 in the final. In the final I was 6/7th out of the first corner but I managed to get past some riders finishing 4th after a red flag with 3 laps to go! Looking forward to the next round of the DTRA at our own Greenfield TT course.”
