Feelgood Frocester! Dursley MXC South West Challenge Shield Round 2 – Race Report & Results

WP

Dursley MXC ran the second meeting of their three round Southwest Challenge Shield at the natural terrain Frocester track nr Gloucester. A gloriously sunny and warm May day greeted the 200 riders. The club made major efforts to water the track before and during the meeting, which paid off as the full 24 race programme was completed without any dust problems at all.

Getting the meeting started were the combined Experts and 2 Stroke classes. Jonathan Hoppner got the first holeshot of the day on the, but it was Curtis Blamey leading at the end of the lap, and with Paul Neale on his tail these two pulled a gap to the rest of the field. Some hard racing followed and eventually Paul’s pressure paid off and he took the race win securing also the fastest lap of the day in 2m03.6 seconds. 2 more moto wins gave Paul the overall with a maximum on the TMC Kawasaki. John May took second in the last moto to get second on the overall, ahead of Curtis Blamey in third to make up the podium. Close racing from Luke Newman, Reagan Skinner and Bradley Flag meant these three finished just one point apart in fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

In the two stroke class, Brandon Benjamin in Moto 1 and Jack Hill in Motos 2 and 3 took the three race wins, but then had DNF’s in the other motos, so top step of the podium went to Mitchell Benjamin for three fast consistent rides. He just edged out Danny Jones in the last moto by one place to leave Danny in the runners up position in the class. William Ell put in three consistent fourth place rides to take the third position on the podium in the class.

The adult juniors were oversubscribed by quite a margin, so a full gate was ensured in this class. Ben Martin got the first holeshot, and three fast consistent rides gave him 3rd overall on the day. Danny Selwood was heading for a maximum after winning two motos, but problems in the third moto left him down in 7th overall. Louis Tunbridge had been chasing Danny hard in the first two races and took the win in the third, so with a 2-2-1 he got the overall victory on the day. Three solid rides from Mike Bacon on his Honda CRF gave him second overall.

The youth class was dominated by Ross Millard on the Yamaha who was consistently 2 seconds a lap quicker than anyone else in the group. He took three gate to flag wins for a maximum on the day. Sam Dyer and Billy Wieczorek had their own private battles swapping second and third places all day. It was the final moto that finally decided it in favour of Billy who had a comfortable second in the end, leaving Sam to pick up third overall.

New to the Dursley MXC for this championship were the Autos on a slightly shortened course as some of the Frocester hills would have been too much of a challenge. Full marks to the club for using the opportunity to water the other parts of the track so that delays were kept to a minimum through the day. The shortened course was perfect for the Autos however and all the riders deserve credit for their efforts. The class was divided into big and small wheel machines On a maximum of three moto wins was Finn Nials on the MidWest Husky. The top six in the big wheels was completed by Jenson Sterry, Ryley Anderson, Walt Carroll, Louis Challenger and George Clark. In the small wheels, the overall victory went to Tyler Cooper followed by Stanley Taylor and Zach White. Well done to Zach for getting on the podium in only his second race meeting!

The 65cc class had an excellent entry, and they raced the full track with some very respectable lap times from the leaders. Kurt Evans was the man to beat but his day started badly with problems on lap 1 race 1. That left him down in 25th place and a recovery ride to 10th overall was the best he could achieve. However, he followed that up with two solid race wins and a fastest lap 5 seconds clear of the field to end up 3rd overall on the day. Ellis Milkins took the first moto with a gate to flag victory, and he followed that up with two more solid rides to take second overall. However, girl power won the day, and it was Ellie Allsopp showing not only good speed, but great racecraft coming from poor starts and working her way through the field each time. Second place in the third moto clinched the overall victory just ahead of Ellis Milkins.

For the 85cc class, the Big Wheels and Small Wheels riders were combined into a single race but scored separately. In the big wheels, Guitar Webster and Brook Jenner split the race wins between them and ended up tied on points with 131 points each. The decision went in favour of Guitar Webster thanks to his win in the third moto. Max Butler took the remaining podium position with three consistent rides ahead of Sam Bishop in fourth. In the small wheel class, Roan Delaney took a maximum of three moto wins and was regularly mixing it with the big wheel riders. Archie Taylor came second in each moto and runner up in the class, followed by Sid Cooper.

Next up were the Veterans with a quality entry on the line. The first holeshot went to Simon Lane, and he was comfortably leading when he was caught out on a slippery off camber section, and no doubt brother James Lane had a grin on his face as he went past into the lead! These two showed why they have been multiple champions and their lap times were still up there with the current experts. Simon got his revenge for the first moto with two race wins after his second place in the first moto and took the overall win in the vets class. James Lane finished runner up. Good consistent riding from Chris Brown and three third places gave him the remaining spot on the podium.

To conclude the meeting, the Adult Seniors class was topped up with the extra riders from the Juniors to produce a full line up on the gate. This was the most disputed group on the day with three different moto winners. Ryan Phillips got the first moto, and then did enough to hold on for the overall victory. An improving Max Luckes achieved his first seniors race victory in the third moto and meant he tied on points with Ben Hawkins who had won the second moto. The decision went in favour of Max Luckes by virtue of his win in the final moto to take the runner up trophy home. James Day was close to a podium result with two second places in the motos, but problems in the second moto dropped him down the field, and in spite of recovering 13 places left him just out of the podium positions in the overall standings.

Congratulations to the club for a superbly organised meeting and looking forward to the next round in June.
