Cameron makes Haste at Westwood! Edge Offroad Protect My Income Enduro Championship Round 9 – Race Report and Results

Edge Offroad are nearly at the end of their 2019 Protect My Income, and the weather sure let them know about it on Sunday! Luckily the all weather venue of Westwood near Sheffield, was on the cards, with Sonya having to sensible change venues the week prior because of the adverse weather coming in!

Round 9 was unfortunate to have the same conditions as Round 2! We all certainly found out who are the hardened enduro riders out there! Safe to say, Clerk of the Course Dan Bewlay yet again created another new, safe and interesting lap at this great venue.

The Youth event got off to a flying start just after 8.30am for one and a quarter hours. Event Director Sonya Jarvis made the decision early doors due to nearly 12 hours of rain to shorten both races!

Riley Freeman did absolutely awesome in the Autos class on an amazing five lap tally in the slippery conditions that was awesome! Jacob Bragg also rode amazingly on his little Honda, and was happy to take second place, and Birthday Boy Oliver Crookes managed to complete three laps to take third place.

In the Junior class Jorge Parkin decided to turn his hand to Enduro but unfortunately had no other competition in his class – nonetheless he still managed to complete eight laps of the tough course and took the winners trophy home.

In the Youth B class, Edge rider Jak Heaney took a very healthy win on nine laps, with Alfie Marsden having a storming ride taking second place and Ailbe Oconnell had an outstanding ride taking the last spot of the podium.

In the Youth A class, Cameron Baker Haste, returning from a shoulder injury, was over the moon to secure the top spot on 12 laps, with Josh Knight having a great ride and taking second place also on 12 laps! Emily Tropman had a fantastic result securing third place on the podium, having absolutely loved the conditions!

Jorge Parkin

Moving swiftly onto the Adult event, Joe Deakin, fresh from his awesome 9th place result at Sea to Sky on Saturday, had to adjust from the 35 degree heat in Turkey to what felt like about 5 degrees at a very wet and wild Westwood! Nothing seems to faze Joe, and yet again he went out and pulled a win out of the bag in the Premier class, finishing with a 12 lap tally. Ryan Staveley, whom we only seem to see on a wet, muddy day also seems to pull these great results out the bag even though he hardly rides anymore! He was happy as a pig in muck, literally, to take second behind Joe – 12 laps to his name! Luke Owen had an awesome start, got in to a great rhythm, rode fantastic with the conditions suiting his riding style, and was happy to take third place.

Ryan Hoare

In the Expert class, Ryan Hoare seemed to find some energy from somewhere later on in the race and managed to take the win from Dan Leadbetter. Dan used to absolutely hate Westwood, and as they say you can’t just keep riding what you love, ride what you hate and you will improve – the proof is in the pudding, Dan took a great second place with Danny Atkinson ride his socks off and securing a fantastic third place in tough conditions!

Dan Leadbetter

In the Masters class, father Owen was also in his element in the muddy conditions and would have happily ridden for hours! He was gutted when the flag went out, he had a great ride and took first place home, Mark Raynor is also of the same mentality as Alex in these conditions, and took second place from Ricky Tropman – who was too tight to buy some new tyres for the occasion so had to settle for third!

Alex Owen

In the Clubman class Robert “Bog” Allen had an outstanding ride taking the win, and would have been second in Experts! Danny Calkin, again loves these conditions, had a fantastic ride and took second in Clubman and would have been third in Expert! Jack Adams who was new to Enduro this year, had a storming ride in the Clubman class taking the final spot on the podium, clearly he loves these conditions as well! They certainly weren’t for the faint hearted!

Robert Allen

In the Sportsman class Scott Hipwell showed that his trials skills come in to force in tough conditions, it’s all about the throttle control! Scott had an outstanding win, with a nine minute lead over second place George Howard, though George is returning from injury he still had a great ride with Will Reid taking third place!

Scott Hipwell

In the Sportsman Vets class, Rob Miller took another trophy home with him, having won with a six minute lead over second place Stephen Dungworth and Andy Granger having to settle for third.

In the Over 50 class, Landowner Tim Reynolds still had to dig deep to secure the win from Tim Howe, both finishing a lap up on third place rider Andy Dean. In the Ladies class, Jade Gordon made a return from mummy duties, and went out and showed how well she shines in these tough conditions, taking the win two laps up on second place rider Kate Smith.

Tim Reynolds

In the Novice class, local lad Tom Slater had an easier task on his hands as one of his main competitors went home as he didn’t want to ride in the tough conditions. Tom took the win ahead of Jamie Dinsdale in second with Adam Day having a fantastic days riding and securing third.
