Allison the Awesome! East Kent SSC Club Championships Round 4 – Race Report, Highlights and Results

WP

In the words of Whitesnake, “here I go, again,” spinning out another race report to further embed EKSSC into the vastness of inter-webs that we’ve all become so dependent on.

Race Report, Images and Edits by Marc Carter – X-Cast Media

You know you could have just watched the racing all day like I did. Understandably you didn’t. Or you’d have only just finished applying after-sun like I have. Anyway, I digress, you’re here to read about the events of the weekend, as opposed to discovering which ointments I decide to rub into my skin (watch out for the follow-up article). So onwards to what happened at East Kent SSC’s fourth club championship round at Chippenham.

So let’s get this show on the road!

First to face the gate-drop was the Youth Open class; Jake Swann appears to have become a household name when conversing about this group! With a target on his back, Swann was adamant on proving that he is indeed, the man to beat. Coming from dead last in the first moto, he carved his way through the pack in admirable fashion to claim the win.

The second moto however, was pilfered by Luke Shepherd, granting him his first ever win in the class and leaving him in good stead for the overall. Unfortunately for Shepherd, the #69 machine denied him the top step of the podium as it all fell back into place for Jake Swann in the final moto.

Rodie Jones would round off the podium in the Youth Open Class, whilst simultaneously taking the 125cc overall following a solid set of results throughout the day.

The club’s premier group then lined themselves up behind the gate ready to contest for victory. For many, such hope would have been offset by the very presence of Ryan Allison.

Ryan Allison

The Husqvarna pilot charged hard in every moto to claim all three wins in dominant fashion, resulting in an undisputed claim for the overall. The second step of the podium would have been awarded to Barry Hannan, had he not suffered some misfortune in the final moto, forcing him to settle for third as Mark Goodson snatched the runner-up spot.

Check out some RAW Footage of Ryan Allison here!

The Under 35s succeeded EK1 in the proceedings, and in moto one it seemed as though Joe Phillips had set the standard for the rest of the day, however in moto two he was unable to replicate his performance after having to fight through the pack to claim ninth. He returned to form in the final race claiming a second win and salvaging third overall at the close of play. Craig Marsden capitalised on Phillips’ adversity, going 3-1-3 for the top step of the podium as Tyrone Tugwell edged just one point ahead of Phillips for the runner-up position.

Big-wheel, little-wheel, cardboard box. I don’t know where I get this stuff…

Moving on!

The Big Wheels were next to watch Ryan Nicholls walk shirtless from the middle of the start straight to the side of the track! Miraculously maintaining focus, the 85cc riders darted out of the start gate as Josh Bassett, Jake Cappa and Bayliss Utting all battled for the lead early on. It was however Bayliss Utting whom would take away three moto victories, along with the overall as Josh Bassett claimed second.

Jake Cappa found himself in the dirt on more than one occasion, yet still managed to rack enough points up to comfortably seize the final podium position!

Check out this short interview with Josh Bassett regarding the racing!

So you came away with three second place finishes, are you happy with that?

“Yes. Considering just last weekend I suffered a hair-line fracture to my right collar bone, I am quite happy with my performance. I managed to put together some pretty fast lap times throughout the day, admittedly I did start to feel a little fatigued at some points as the track started to deteriorate. Ultimately 2nd overall and 1st for the club leaves me in a good position looking forward in the championship.”

What are your thoughts on Bayliss Utting?

“Bayliss has always been fast. Chippenham seems to be one of those tracks where it all pieces together quite well for him! He deserved all three wins and the overall to go with it.”

What are your plans for the rest of the season?

“Of course my injury has set me back in the MX Nationals, we had planned to race Hawkstone but felt it would have been a little too brutal. So we took a step back to recuperate and see where we were at. I’m still going to throw my hat in the ring at the remaining rounds and see where it goes from there. We have a couple of other ideas in the pipeline, but we are still undecided on what to prioritise going forward.”

Any final thoughts on the weekend?

“It was hot! The first hot round of the season always comes with its ups and downs, the track prep was as good as it could have been, trying to get the balance right when watering the track can be quite hard; there was a good variation of rutted and slick corners which allowed for the racing to remain technical and interesting for people to watch. Overall I think the meeting ran pretty well!”

The Small Wheel class were next to take to the line, and it was the #331 machine of Joseph Leeks ascertaining all three moto wins and the top step of the podium uncontested. Chester Hyde collected a decent set of results for second overall. Coming in to the final moto, both Levi Saunders and Jake Brown found themselves on equal points. But it was Jake Brown finishing one position ahead of Saunders which tipped the scales in his favour for third overall. Levi Saunders had to settle for a humble, yet respectable fourth.

Jake Cappa – Big Wheel 85’s

The Junior/65cc class were the penultimate group congregating to face the gate-drop! Aimus Peckham charged home in the first race to claim the moto win. However, it was Noah Eastwood scavenging the final two moto victories and a second in the first, which permitted him to ascend to the top step of the podium. Aimus went 1-2-4, edging Alfie Osborn off of the runner-up step by a singular point at the close of play!

Finally, The Tiny Titans! The Gods of the Arena! The Grassroots of the Sport! The Autos!

Aboard their little 50cc machines, these miniature men (and women) shot out of the gate for three action-packed motos! Tyler Rogers has definitely asserted himself early on this year, with multiple race wins already, he shows no signs of slowing the momentum! Going three-for-three, Rogers claimed every moto win whilst extending his championship lead in the process.

It was a two horse race for second overall between George Steel and Charlie Ward coming into the final moto. With each rider having claimed a second and third in the opening races, all the pressure was on these little guys to pull this one out of the bag! In the end, it was George Steel storming past the final chequered flag of the day in second to claim second overall, as Charlie Ward found himself having to battle through the mid-pack to salvage a third.
