A run to the wire! East Anglia SSC Club Champs Round 12 – Race Report and Results

by adminOctober 30, 2018

The East Anglia SSC were at Wakes Colne for the 12th and last round of the Club Championship on Sunday. This was always going to be a meeting that run to a tight schedule, as the clocks went back on Saturday night. Wakes also has a strict time limit of 10 am to 5pm.

By Saturday evening all was done and prepared and we were ready to go but then the rain came and did it come, all night. Fortunately it stopped on Sunday morning before racing commenced and we only had light showers during the day.

The rain had left one very wet spot, which we thought was caused by water run off and would clear during racing but unfortunately a natural spring had come up under the track and the mud became impassable. Having dug a number of bikes out the decision was made to reroute the track but it cost a lot of time.

The rest of the day went very well, the track rode perfectly and the racing was fantastic. In fact I can’t remember it any better but the light started to close in and it was obvious that it was going to be touch and go to finish the third block. The decision was taken to carry on and cut the races to make it fit. We just got it done in time and as the last race crossed the line the light failed completely. It was a very difficult decision to carry on and I hope I don’t have to make it again but everyone got their championship completed and we finished the season on a high note.

This was not only the last round of the club championship it was also East Anglia’s Memorial Meeting. Over the years we have been donated various memorial awards that were traditionally awarded at specific tracks but as a lot of these are now lost, it was decided to award them all at the last meeting of the season in celebration of the last of East Anglia’s traditional tracks.

The John Holland Memorials are a series of plaques that have been in the club for a very long time and are awarded to the first club member home in each group at this meeting.

The Des Crooks Trophy is awarded to a young rider in memory of one of our founding members and a previous owner of the Wakes Colne circuit. This was awarded to Lewis Harris.

The Richard Fitch award goes to the Big Wheel 85 rider who finishes 11th on the day and today went to Max McGilley. Richard was a long-standing member of our club and rode number 11.

Mick Mellior was the owner of the old Chappel track who invited us to build a track on his land many years ago. This award is presented to an adult rider and today went to Ryan Oliver.

John Stewart was also a long- standing club member of our club and this award goes to either an Open group or Vet rider. Josh Bellett was awarded it today. All of these trophies go to Club Members only and are awarded for effort over excellence.

The revised race order started with the Youth Open and 125’s and Reece Martin had a clean sweep in the open with Adam Caroleo coming second and Jimmy Cornish in third. Casey Lambely took the first place in the 125’s with Billy Watson close behind and Caiden Wilkinson taking the third place. Interestingly in the overall results a 125 came in 2nd. 3rd and 5th. The John Holland Memorial went to Casey Lambely.

MX2 was out next and Toby Avis had another clean sweep with three straight wins, Todd Richie took the second overall with Bill Moynes coming a close third. Toby also took the John Holland.
On a day of Clean Sweeps John Hinze had the first place in the Vets with three straight wins. Paul “Wildman” Willis came second with two seconds and Richard Paxman came third with two thirds. The Wildman had the John Holland as well.

Connor Hughes had the next clean sweep in the MX1 class with an amazing ride in a battle of the giants. Darryl Maxwell came second with three seconds and Jason Moreland came third with three thirds. Darryl had the John Holland.

Next out was the Big Wheel 85’s and Leon Ongly had the clean sweep this time with Dexter Milbourne taking the second slot and Harrison Forde coming in third. The John Holland was won by Leon.

The Autos were next in one of only two groups to mix the results. Finnley Barker had the lead with two seconds and a third place from Chase Panter who had two good wins but lost out in the second race and Ellis Nelson came third with the win in the second race. Finnley took the John Holland.

The Juniors was won by Harvey Antrobus with two wins and a second place. Charlie Richmond had a close second and took the win the last race and Ben Casey had the third overall. Harvey Antrobus also had the John Holland.

The last group out was the Small Wheel 85’s and back to a clean sweep. This time Bayliss Utting took the top slot from Tye Jones with Liam Bennet taking the third place after some close racing and a mix of second and third places. Baylis took the John Holland.
