A matter of Matthews! South West Offroad Motocross Champs Round 2 – Race Report and Results

by adminMarch 15, 2019

Sunday March the 17th was to be the day of round 2 of the South West Off Road Motocross Moto logic series for 2019. With high winds over the course of the weekend, the Littlehempston track was in prime condition and ready to see some action on behalf of the hosting club Teignbridge.

The Junior Elite class provided some great action-packed racing with Justin Wood and Chris Jerwood hard out the gate and taking off at the front in Moto 1.  All eyes were on Jack Matthews though, who was on the new yzf 250, and was making a charge through the pack, taking the lead at the front to hold on for a win. Justin Wood finished 2nd. Alan Packer on the Yamaha was also on a flyer showing the younger generation that you ain’t done at 35 years old with a fantastic 3rd place. Chris Jerwood finished 4th with Dom Deano Wilson Stoneman on the Rockstar SMS Husqvarna following closely in 5th.

Some advice from Swors very own starter

Race 2 was another close battle with Paul Ford taking the lead on the opening lap and putting a gap between himself and the pack for the first few laps, but Matthews was there again and took over at the front and held his own for another win. Paul Ford came home in 2nd, Stoneman 3rd, Mark Bates on the Pro Circuit Kawasaki 4th, with Ross Norman on the Mason Kings KTM following closely in 5th at the line.

Race 3 was on the line and again it was Justin Wood on the KTM who led the field, but Matthews caught him and looked to have the race tied up, but a mistake cost him allowing Alan Packer to take the lead along with the win, followed very closely by young gun Memphis Enright on the Enright powered KTM 150. Matthews eventually regained himself and finished 3rd with Mark Bates 4th and Paul Ford 5th.

The Seniors heading for the hills

What a great line up in the Experts it was, and it was fantastic to see so many riders attending the ever popular circuit. It was Josh Taylor on the Dirtwheelz KTM who led race one from Robbie Cross and Wayne Shimmel in 3rd, but it wouldn’t stay that way for long as the pressure was applied from the charging pack, and Shimmel made his move up to 2nd. After a great effort, Shimmel took the lead on the final lap from Taylor where they stayed to the finish line with Cross securing 3rd. Ben Butler on the Maunders Racing Kawasaki/Yamaha was in a good battle with Olly Jones on the Husqvarna and both held onto 4th and 5th.

Race 2 and it was the A.J Gibbons Honda of Ben Gibbons with the holeshot but Taylor again made a move into the lead, but Shimmel was hot on the Tyremarks Honda and keen to make a move and soon took over at the front. Butler had another solid ride with a 3rd place finish in front of Olly Jones again and Dan Wade in 5th.

Race 3 was a little slick as the slight damping of rain just before made the track very demanding but again Taylor was out front and held onto his lead to take the win from Shimmel. Robbie Cross was 3rd, Ben Butler 4th and the Motoskinz Yamaha of Jack Stevens 5th.

It was great to see so many Youth riders out there this weekend again and Ben Zeale was to start the day off leading the Inters group but young Henry Life was to take charge near the end of the race and took the win. Dylan Williams was 3rd, Ashton Coleman 4th, and Ezra Blackwell 5th.

Race 2 and it was Life again who took to the front for another win from Ashton Coleman in 2nd. Dylan Williams came from 5th on lap one to a fantastic 3rd at the line. Ezra Blackwell had another solid ride in 4th from Kyran Nicholas in 5th.

The goggles were off for Iain Enright

Race 3 was another win for Life, but Ben zeale put in a fantastic effort at the beginning of the race and took the lead and the win from Life in 2nd, Ezra Blackwell 3rd, Dylan Williams 4th and Ashton Coleman 5th.

Adam Pellow was out the gate and in the lead in the first moto of the Junior Open class but hometown hero Dan Cook on the DC TCR Kawasaki was to take charge and the victory from Tristan Lethaby in 2nd. Chris Matthews was to make his return to the group and moved from 5th on the final lap to 3rd, Martin Wherry on the Biffa Husquvana was 4th and young Sam Andrews 5th.

Race 2 was a start to finish win for Tristan Lethaby followed by Adam Pellow in 2nd, Dan Cook 3rd, Sam Andrews 4th and Neal Woolridge in 5th just in front of Michael Rich and Cain White in 6th and 7th.

Race 3 was to be a wet one with the heavens opening up, but it was Tristan out front again until Pellow made a mistake as he crossed the line in the lead which then handed the race back to Tristan who took the win but under great pressure from Martin Wherry with a fantastic 2nd, Dan cook took 3rd, Chris Tibbs 4th and Sam Andrews 5th.

Martin Wherry in the Junior Open

Seniors were all on form again and with the surprise entry of Matt Holcombe on the 1988 cr125, who knew what was going to happen? Race 1 saw Holcombe come through the battling pack and took the race win from young Kyle Breslan on the TCR Kawasaki. Lee Goodland had a strong 3rd place with lap 1 leader Cole Davis finishing 4th on his return to racing from injury. Closely behind him was the SMS Buildbase Geico Honda of Brendon Philips who after a strong winter testing really came on strong from starting 7th in lap 1.

Lee Goodland took to the lead in the 2nd race but Holcombe was there again on the Honda that was older than some of the racers in his class and took the lead and the win from Goodland. Luke Connelly had a solid 3rd, Kurt Pugsley on the loved up Pat Watts Yamaha rode well for 4th, from the Tyremarks KTM of Reagan West in a great 5th.

Race 3 was much the same with Goodland taking the lead at the beginning from the eventual race winner Holcombe. Reagan West finished 3rd, Pugsley was again in the mix in 4th, and Jason Sweet had a great ride for 5th.

The Support class was stacked out again, but it was Fin Trezise with 3 wins who took the overall for the day. Dan Cox had a great scorecard of 5-7-2 which was enough for 2nd overall. Callum Wicks just edged our Matt Wilkins for 3rd.

The club would like to thank everybody involved with the meeting and look forward to the next round of the Motologic SWOR championship this Sunday at Crediton. For more info go to https://www.swormx.co.uk/
