UK EVO Series starts with a Bang – Race Report and Results

by adminApril 12, 2017

With the continuous and rapid growth in the numbers of riders wanting to not only own but also race an EVO motocross bike, their desire is now being fed by the formation of the UK EVO club. Affiliated to the AMCA, during 2016 UK EVO ran a four round series and a major two-day finale at Culham, all of which proved to be extremely successful, but the question now was could they build on those very impressive and solid foundations?

Report and Pictures by Mike Wood

Well, on the evidence of Sunday’s opening meeting in 2017, the answer to that question is an emphatic yes with nearly 300 riders kicking the new series off in style.

On the very old-school circuit at Ford in Wiltshire, the day started with a very fitting tribute lap in memory of Mark Hucklebridge before the revs were raised ready to go racing on those gleaming, beautiful EVO machines. What followed was a full programme of 27 action-packed moto’s, played out in front of a large and very appreciative crowd. First up was the always entertaining 125cc EVO class, the opening win of the day going to the talented John May ahead of Bradley Doyle and Jack Gribble. May’s hopes though of taking the overall victory were dashed by a moto two DNF. In that clash it was Gribble who was first past the chequered flag, a feat he repeated in the last race of the day to also top the podium.

At the front of the 250cc EVO class, it was all about an intriguing battle between two very determined and quality modern racers in Luke Hawkins and Jamie Skuse. Turning on the style and entertaining the punters, Skuse took the moto one win from Hawkins and Ayrton Fiorenzio. In the remaining two clashes though, Hawkins got the better of Skuse to also take the overall verdict with the very experienced Stuart Rawlings bagging third. In a combined 500cc EVO/Twinshock class, the day started with a super tussle for supremacy as determined Yorkshireman Danny Blakeley got the better of Ryan Harris, both riders mounted on super-quick KX Kawasaki machines. With the two groups scored separately, Blakeley went on to top the EVO class from Harris and Sam Oliver. It was James Ovens who finished top of the Twinshock boys from Ady Matthews and James Graham.

Rob Mead on the tiny Honda CR125cc produced a great performance at Ford to top the Open Vets EVO class. Mead really stretched that throttle wire to win the opening two moto’s before chasing Sean Doyle home in the last clash. Doyle who was always in the mix went onto earn 3rd overall just behind Mark Roberts with Martin King, Greg Cox and Stephen Sparrow also right in the mix.

There was three classes for the WME (West Midlands EVO) riders on Sunday. In Pre 125cc class, Zac Hackett took moto one from Neil Griffiths and Steve Gray. Indeed in the remaining two moto’s these riders were to again feature at the front of the pack. Now though it was Griffiths taking both wins chased by Hackett and Gray. In the WME 250cc group, the victor was to be clear cut as Dean Warren stormed to three moto wins with Paul Baldwin the next best from Jim Shand, Bradley Stokes and Kevin Butcher. WME 500cc saw Paul Kirby take the opening moto from Jake Chamberlain, Kevin Reed and Matt Hitchman. In the remaining action it was Hitchman first past the post from Kirby and Reed. The overall standings saw Kirby taking the top podium spot.

In this feast of racing, the Super EVO certainly lived up to its billing at Ford as Chuck Davies on his immaculately prepared CR125cc Honda took a richly deserved and hard earned overall win. Young Chuck started in style by bagging the opening two moto victories. In the last clash of the day it was Alec Everitt who was past the chequered flag with the determined Davies in tow. That result earned Everitt 2nd on the podium from Darren Marklove, Simon Dearing, Darren Kennington and Max Hendy.

The busy programme at Ford was completed by a modern 2T class which also produced a full entry and with it some close, exciting action. James Faulkner (twice) and Luke Smith took the race wins with Faulkner also the overall victor. After this superb UK EVO series opener, the action now moves onto North Nibley on Sunday, 23rd April, it’s an event certainly not to be missed.
