Easter Feast at Culham! Maxxis British Motocross Championships Round 1 – Report & Results

by adminApril 2, 2018

With some trepidation the Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championships opened up it’s season for the second time of asking.  The British Motocross Festival was reduced to this one day but with the track in prime conditions for the Main event the right call was made by the promoters RHL Activities and the countries top racers were given a great stage to showcase their talents.

Opening up proceedings was the British 2 Stroke Championships which proved so popular last year.   Reigning Champion Mike Kras of GL12 Racing was in no mood to mess about, and just as he did at Red Sands in the Euro’s he powered his way to two faultless moto wins for the overall.  Ashley Wilde held off Manuel Acopi for 2nd in the first race and followed this up

with another runners up postion in the 2nd moto for second spot on the podium.  Acopi suffered a DNF in race two so it was South African veteran Neville Bradshaw who stepped up to the plate in third which gave him the final podium spot on the day.

Fresh from his Huck Cup victory Conrad Mewse continued his winning streak with a pair of untouchable rides to take the MX2 victory. One of the biggest talking points was the impressive performance from Josh Gilbert who looks a lean mean racing machine in 2018 and rode to a duo of second place finishes and 2nd on the podium.  Revo Husqvarna’s Mel Pocock fresh from his EMX250 podium at Red Sands came third in the opening Moto with a fourth in the second to secure third place on the podium.  Liam Knight will be a threat to

the podium in future rounds based on this performance with a 5th and a 3rd giving him overall 4th, whilst Ashton-Lee Dickinson impressed with 5th overall.

The battle for the MX1 win was a less straight forward affair and with a string of Big hitters in this class it is set for an intriguing season.

Every one had to double take when it was Rob Hooper Racing Yamaha’s Kristian Whatley who headed the field on Lap one.  Having not raced in competitive action for a year no one expected Whatley to be the early pacesetter and as predicted he tired after a few laps but still came home in a credible 5th after a long lay off.  It was Brad Anderson who then tasted fresh air but reigning champion Graeme Irwin was on a charge and pulled through to the lead and the race one win. Also working through the pack was Jake Nicholls who got as far as

second place, ahead of Brad Anderson who finished 3rd. Elliot Banks Browne was also showing speed and by lap 3 was upto 4th but a mechanical issue halted his progress and he ended up finishing in 13th.  The biggest surge through the field came from the big Russian Evgeny Bobryshev who from a lap 0ne 17th weaved his way through the traffic to finish 4th, ahead of Whatley in 5th, with his Rob Hooper Racing team mate Ryan Houghton in 6th.

Ivo Monticelli, a non finisher in race one was the surprise initial leader of race 2, but before long, Geartec Husqvarna’s Elliot Banks-Browne was in the lead and looking good.  With a better start Bobryshev looked threatening but so did Irwin and so did Nicholls, and as Monticelli dropped down the order the cream was rising to the top and the fastest men on track were chasing down Banks-Browne.  A fall for Nicholls meant his chances of a race win were over but Bobryshev continued a strong pace to be on on Banks Browne’s tail with a few laps to go, and eventually pulled into the lead to take the Moto 2 win ahead of Banks-Browne second, Irwin in third, Nicholls 4th, Monticelli 5th, Anderson in 6th, Whatley 7th, Houghton 8th and Dan Thornill in 9th.

With a win and a third the overall went to Irwin, with Bobryshev in 2nd and Nicholls third.

The next round of the series is at Canada Heights in Kent on the 22nd April.
