Blistering Brookthorpe! BSMA Nationals Round 2 – Race Report and Results

by adminJune 25, 2018

Blistering sunshine gave the BSMA national series plenty of work before the first engine even started with 1000’s of gallons of water being put down to attempt to keep the dust away, but even that managed to de-rail plans for 3 races on the Saturday as by the middle of block 2 the dust was becoming a big problem.

Report and Images by Ady Cowshall

As many will recall the ‘old’ Brookthorpe would of been unrideable after such a dry spell, but last years track modifications helped to ensure that two days racing took place with the added woodchip retaining some moisture to enable Sundays racing to be a much less dusty affair.

Saturday saw the fast boys in the adult class hit the track first with MX1 and 2 mixed. Adam Harris really only had mx2 riders to contend with as he was quite some way clear of his closest mx1 rivals for most of his races. Tyrone Cleaver did at times get up to striking distance and indeed took Harris’s maximum away by winning the third encounter but a poor first race left him trailing in third overall behind Troy Willerton.

Last years mx1 champion was out for the first time in the series after a fixture clash left him absent from round one and he secured 4th on the day only a few points adrift of Cleaver. Carl Jones got in a tangle with Sion Talbot in the first race which dropped him out of a good overall finish which was then compounded by a DNF in the last race. The mx2 riders had to sit in the roost of Harris’s screaming 2 stroke for most of the weekend but they did make life difficult for him at times. Jack Timms came out swinging on his new mount after departing from the JSR Honda camp he’d gone back orange and won 3 of the 4 mx2 races beating all the mx1 riders in the last race on Sunday to boot. Talbot showed him the way home in the second heat and was bridesmaid to Timms in the others giving him a solid second overall behind Timms.

Saturday saw Lee Truman’s run of good form continue with two third place finishes but a freak stone to the finger on the first lap of practice in Sunday put him out with a broken finger requiring an operation! Truman’s absence allowed Kieran Yorke and Carl Haycock an opportunity to each grab a third apiece on Sunday and by virtue or better placings Yorke had third overall. Ieuan Harris continues to prove that starting the sport later in life dosen’t have to be a bad thing with some strong finishes for 5th overall behind Jonny Roderick-Evans.

The mixed novice and vets group was again dominated by the mature portly gents showing the newbies how to ride with not only speed but style and grace as round one winner and runner up both annihilated the field, Andy Marchant seemed to have gotten round one nerves out of his locker and didn’t hang around for Christian Seldon to give him a hard time unlike round one. The pair gaped third placed vet Lee Spurr significantly finishing one, two on each occasion. Spurr got unwanted attention on Sunday from Chris Peaty in the third heat putting what would of been a quartet of thirds down to a trio but still taking third overall, Peaty’s finish gave him enough for 4th with John Gauntlett’s first moto 4th boosting his points tally up enough to keep him ahead of a tight points battle behind him with Simon Bracey, Richard Caddick, Iwan Rees, Paul Webb and Colin Yeend all within 10 points of one another.

The younger less experienced novice riders might have played second fiddle to the vets but you can bet they are picking up tips on how to ride quicker. Jak Ford being the quickest on track but sustaining a dnf dropped him out of contention with 2 races wins gifting the overall to Phil Evans who also picked up 2 wins but was beaten by Ford on 2 of the 3 occasions Ford finished. But its the one that crosses the line that wins and it was Evans who had the consistency to take top spot. Jack Partridge and Scott Mayhew beat up on each other trading places but consistency once again took pride of place as Mayhew’s last race result dropped him 4 points down on the pairs battle for 2nd overall

The Senior open class was a again a hard fought battle with Jayden Murphy looking hot as favourite after Saturday’s two race wins but Sunday didn’t go as expected with a poor start and unable to make up the ground on the two front runners followed by a heavy fall resulting in a dnf it left the door wide open for a gaggle of more yzf’s to share in the spoils of victory. Jack Wankling’s weekend got better as the races went on going 3-2-1 before Josh Greedy reeled in a big margin in the final moto to catch and pass Wankling but that wasn’t enough to stop the 772 Yamaha rider taking the overall. Pip Davies couldnt quite match the pace of the trio of Yamaha’s but with Murphy out got his Yam on the third step of the podium making it a blue clean sweep! Tommi Davies was the first non Jap bike in line with 4th overall and some spectacular ariel antics with Owen Woodhouse rounding out the top five.

The Senior 125’s might have been missing the extra 125cc’s but you wouldn’t of noticed with a superb display of dominance from The Dom Lancett. A max 4 out of 4 although on paper it looks easy he was hard pushed at times and in fact aided by Ryan Tanner’s spill while leading in one but really did look in charge of the group. Tanner pushed hard and managed a clean sweep of second’s ahead of last years champ Callum Beeken who despite leading briefly couldn’t halt the charge of this pair but solidified his championship with thirds all weekend. Thomas Casbeard somehow didn’t crack the top three, up there battling all weekend but had to relent to the speed of those in front but benefited from a slightly de-tuned James Hanscomb who wasn’t quite on his usual form suffering from a niggling injury to finish 5th on the weekend still in contention.

The front running 85’s are that quick even a wily veteran like myself cant hold their pace as I found out at a mid week practice at Apex with big wheel rider Ethan Sills showing me the way round and dominating the weekend. Maybe not by as much as he would of liked but enough to take home all the laurels leaving Billy Duke to pick up his performance picking up a trio of seconds and a fourth to secure runner up but pushing Sills hard the whole of the last moto. Jak Taylor for a short time looked like he might upset Sill’s maximum but Sills applied the pressure and he couldn’t match the prolonged speed but finished second to Sills in the third heat. Trystan Williams picked up the Apico holeshot award in the third but was demoted quickly to third, that with another brace of third place finishes was enough with his first race 4th for third overall with Alfie Rickwood losing out on highest place finish to Taylor for 4th.

Small Wheels were on the whole chasing a flying Kawasaki in the hands of Ben Mustoe. Mustoe won 3 out of the 4 finishing third in the other to take the overall. Ellis Poole clocked up the other victory and a 3-2-1-2 scorecard to take the second step. There was flashes of brilliance from Lewis Roden and Dylan Williams but fast starts and good riding put Jake Randall ahead in the overall finishing with the final step on the podium. Ben Zeale managed to put himself two places in front of Randall in one moto but a first race 6th left him playing catch up all weekend and ended up 4th overall. All these boys were aided by a tumble by first round supremo Jake Smith resulting in a badly twisted knee and no points for round two! Another Smith, Tyler looked hot to trott for the second round in a row but a similar fate unfolded after a good first race result of second his weekend went to pot!

The Junior 65’s went the way of Freddie Gardiner with his superior jumping skills being the main reason on pulling a maximum over Joey Benfield. Benfield dropped slowly off the pace of Gardiner as each lap wound down but was in contention for most of the races, only trouble is with the next round being another jump-fest it will be a brave man to bet against another Gardiner clean sweep.Harlow Green had been having a few weeks of bad luck but looks like his ducks been broken getting back in the mix pulling two thirds and fourths to sneek a podium ahead of Ollie Bubb who had a cracking third heat finishing a solid second for fourth overall. But they all need to keep an eye out for the fast improving Gus Mustoe, brother of Ben in the small wheels who is looking every part the equal to big brother and coming on strong.

The final group, the one so many fought for to be kept as part of the national series but seems to be struggling with numbers, the auto’s was a brilliant display by Lee Simkiss who was headed once but only briefly. No one could match his pace as he rocketed to 4 out of 4. Logan Gardiner and Jenson Severn had brief spells of glory but couldn’t contain the #55. Gardiner battled with Severn on numerous occasions but each time got the edge to take second. Behind them it was the Ollie show, Waters and Truman both beat each other but it was the consistency of Waters that had him on top with Truman’s middle races being his downfall losing out to Matthew Morgan and Bobby Ray Smith but still doing enough to secure fifth overall.

The third round moves to the hugely popular Wroxton circuit, very fast and full of jumps, with fantastic track viewing so get along to watch the series unfold.
