by adminFebruary 27, 2018

The final weekend of February 2018 saw the EKSSC Summer Championship reignite with a bang. Returning to West

Albie Wilkie in fine form

Meon for the season opener, East Kent produced an impressive display of racing; each class stacked to the brim with talent and numbers, throwing riders and spectators alike straight into the deep end this year.

Situated on a natural hillside, West Meon does not deprive of altering gradients, long straights and complex corners. For riders this would mean coupling technicality with raw speed, aggressive acceleration with tempered braking, as well as the physical with the mental. Resulting in no shortage of exhilaration to follow on from a successful 2017 campaign.

Alfie Cox

First to face the gate drop was the Youth Open Class. There were countless talented riders throughout the group, however, it was Jack Carpenter pilfering the top step of the podium. Battling all day with Sam Ongley; Carpenter managed to position his KTM ahead of Ongley’s Yamaha in a great exhibition of racing. Ongley would go on to claim second overall, as Alfie Cox reels home the final podium position.

The club’s newly labelled, ‘EK1’ class, presented the fastest and for some, most anticipated racing of the day. Former EMX 150 Champion, Albie Wilkie, swept the class with three, well-earned victories. Battling his way to the head of the pack throughout the day and asserting his dominance over the competition. Wilkie, aboard his Evo-Tech branded KTM, has set the standard for East Kent’s

Noah Eastwood

premier class early on this season.

Last year’s Senior Class Champion, Ebby Elliot charged home with immense pace to clench the runner up spot. Whilst Sam Holloway placed his KTM 250 two-smoker in third.

The Clubman class then took to the start. The top three riders, all proved that the group holds quality parallel to its quantity this season, providing an array of exciting racing before day’s end. Alistair Patterson would be the first rider to claim an early championship lead, following three solid finishes, he emerged victorious, as Daniel Leathem and Lee White filled out the final podium places.

Both Big Wheel and Small Wheel classes delivered out-right victors also. Leon Ongley, moving up to Big Wheel

Boston Gilbert

following a successful year in 2017, continues with three solid moto wins. Ultimately granting him the overall and undoubtedly, kick-starting what will be a bountiful 2018 season for the young rider.

Reuben Bailey strung together a triad of consistent third place finishes to claim the runner up spot, as an unfortunate second moto for Beau Gosnell, forces him to humbly settle for third.

The Small Wheel class witnessed Boston Gilbert, decimate the opposition. Claiming all three race wins, Boston maintains a humble, composed demeanor around the paddock, making it that much more gratifying to see him do well in his endeavours.

Archie Edwards

Josh Bassett, the Small Wheel Class’ reigning Champion collected all three second place finishes to modestly grip second overall behind Gilbert. Bassett’s One Shot Racing teammate, Jack Cappa positioned his TC85 just where it needed to be in the final moto, edging ahead of Freddie Taylor-Rye by a singular point, to snatch the final podium place.

The Junior Class could only lay in the wake of Noah Eastwood; storming ahead with purpose, Eastwood assumed all three moto victories and the overall with admirable performances throughout. Riley Ingram and Joe Grainger finished on equal points, as Ingram edges ahead following a better finish in the final moto, stealing the runner-up spot as Grainger settles for third.

The Auto class could only observe, as MBO’s Archie Edwards stormed ahead to claim the overall. Tricked out on his Husqvarna TC50, Edwards (reigning champion) no stranger to victory, once again assumes the top step of the podium, a place he will most certainly seek to retain as the year transpires.

William Pearce fought hard all day to clench three consistent second place finishes, whilst Tyler Rogers grasps all final podium finishes on the day, rounding off the top three Auto riders and concluding the day’s proceedings.
