Pocock back on track! British Minibike Champs Round 3 & 4 – Race Report & Results

by adminJune 1, 2018

The hallowed turf of Kieradan Park, near Scunthorpe was in pristine condition for the 3rd and 4th rounds of the British Minibike Championships which were held over the Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend.

The MBC crew and track owners worked wonders to provide a fantastic race circuit and venue, with the facilities on point for the event with the Paddock like a billiard table.

For the 50cc Kids Kieradan is the most challenging track in the championships with it’s deep, loamy, soiley sand tough going for the little wheels, but these youngsters are made of strong stuff and always come off the track smiling at the end of a moto.

One little lad who was beaming after his performance at the weekend was Robbie Daly who stormed to 3 moto wins on each day to take both round wins in the Kids 50cc class. Team Crampton piled up the points behind him with Kasey second and Charlie third on the Saturday with the positions reversed on the Sunday.  Mason Flynn and Maddie Banks swapped positions in motos all weekend long but it was Flynn who edged it for 4th on both days with Banks in 5th.  Otto Hookham had a great day on the Saturday with a fine 6th overall. Spare a thought for young Tyler Griffiths who broke his arm on the Saturday so we wish him a speedy recovery.

Leo Vowles is on fire this season, and left the rest of the Youth 125 Junior class in his wake as he powered to another 6 race wins and victories in both rounds. Behind Vowles though the competition is fierce and it was Jake Speller who made the best of it on Saturday for second with Harry Lee in third. It was all change for second and third on the Sunday though as Jack Perry shone through for the runner’s up spot and Ethan Lochrie aboard the MotoFamily electric machine in third, the first time an Electric machine has made the podium in this class, and possibly a sign of things to come.

In the Youth Senior Class Ewan Goddard has well and truly got his mojo and looked a class act for a full house of race and overall victories over the weekend.  Freddie Hills continued his good run of form for 2nd overall on the Saturday with James Lee riding well in third. Senna Ace-Summers was also starting to show some speed and was 4th.  James Lee jumped up a spot on the Sunday and into second whilst Harry Streeter joined the top three podium party with 3rd.

The Small 88cc class was won on the Saturday by Tom Parker with Simon Crowther taking over the top spot on Sunday.

The fast and furious 110cc class is renowned for throwing up some varied results and it was Jack Titterell who put himself on the top step of the podium with a great performance just one point ahead of round one winner Piers Skinner who won races two and three on the Saturday with Oscar Stearn in third.  Skinner continued his Saturday winning flow with another three chequered flags on the Sunday and the overall, with Matt Holcombe putting in a good shift for second and Titterell in third.

Kris Ayres is certainly turning heads this year and a full house on Saturday in the 140cc group certainly had people talking in what was probably his best ever MBC performance. Reigning Champ Ash Gorman had to settle for second on each occasion whilst Nationals Champ Blaine Blackwell was third in each outing. Gorman wishes every day was like Sunday though and as with the Mildenhall event he traipsed to a trio of wins for the the overall from the Sunday session. With Ayres and Blackwell suffering last race misfortune it was Louis Dutton who stepped up to the plate in second for his first ever MBC Adult Top Three, with Chris Tompkins in third.

Lee Mitchell is certainly the Master of his own destiny and once again went through the card on both days to make it 12 race wins from 12 in 2018 in the Masters class.  Jay Taylor looked good and brought it home for second on both days with Scott Joyner third on the Saturday, and the returning Minibike veteran Wayne Johnstone, aboard his sons 110, third on the Sunday earning him the Rider of the day award.

The Euphoria of Mildenhall turned to bitter disappointment for Jason Gutteridge who crashed out in Moto 1 on Saturday in the Vets class and broke his collarbone. Get well soon Jason. This left Chris Rose to do what he does best and race to six wins and go to the top of the Vets championship standings after 4 rounds. Leighton Howard aboard his daughter Ruby’s 110 machine reeled back the years for 2nd on Saturday ahead of MBC stalwart Colin Blackwell in third. Blackwell moved up a position to second on the Sunday ahead of Russell Mason.

Gerald Hodgekinson pulled the Clubman win out of the bag on the Saturday having moved himself out of the Vets class, with Michael Murrill second and Tom Burrill taking third.  Joshua French came though on the Sunday for the win ahead of Ryan Cooper and Jacob Dell.

The guys in the Expert A+ class are churning out some speed and Dale Howard certainly so with a fine win on the Saturday. Youngster Daniel Fisher is improving all of the time and raced to an impressive second with Rick Ford in third.  Tyrone Tugwell threw the gauntlet down on the Sunday with a strong win. Jody Barnes improved on his day one 4th with second, with Fisher again in the top three with third.

After Mike Valade’s World Championship victory you would be hard pushed to bet against him in the Pro class but after a disastrous first two rounds current British Champ Bradley Pocock looked fitter, faster and stronger as he defeated his French rival 2 moto’s to 3 on both days to take the overall in both rounds. Valade though, in coming second overall on each day racked up enough points to be a serious championship contender at the half way stage.  Kris Ayres leads the standing’s though after recording third place finishes on both days and his consistency has been the key to his massive points haul.  Jody Burton got the better of his Danish rival Sebastian Kaergaard for 4th on the Saturday with the roles reversing on the Sunday.

The Championship moves onto a new venue for the MBC on the 23rd and 24th June and the Route34 Motopark near Winchester. For more info on the Championships visit http://www.minibikechamps.com/
