Double Bubble for Blackwell. Minibike Nationals – Race Report & Results

by adminMarch 28, 2018

Members of the Minibike Champs were presented with a completely revamped Champs Parc circuit last weekend for the first major event of the year in the MBC Calendar the Minibike Nationals.

Despite drizzle on Friday evening the track was in superb condition come the first race on Saturday morning, and as with the start of any new season anticipation was rife, with everyone eyeing up their competition’s new look machinery, kit and the speed they would be powering around the track after their winter slumbers.

In the Kids 50cc class the National title went to Dayton Thomspon who strung together a hatrick of race wins from the 5 to stand proudly on top of the podium with his Duck Smart in hand.  Nipping at Thompson’s heels though were the 6 year old super fast duo of Robbie Daly who finished 2nd and Riley Ray Barrow who improves with every race, and made every holeshot in 3rd.  These three will certainly be a trio to watch when the Minibike British Championships begins.

A rider who has honed his skill’s over the off season was young Leo Vowles who blitzed the opposition with 5 wins from 5 and the Nationals title under his belt in the Youth Junior 125cc class.  Jack Perry and Jake Spiller traded places in each race throughout the weekend but it was Perry who had the edge and took 2nd with Spiller in third.

Lacking his old sparring partner Louis Dutton who has been promoted to the Adult ranks, Ewan Goddard rode to a confident 5 ride win Maximum in the Youth Senior 125cc class and based on this performance he is going to take some stopping in 2018.  Harry Streeter put in a consistent run of results to claim 2nd overall, and doing it for the Dutton’s in this class was Alex who took advantage of a rough Sunday for Harrison Jepson to claim 3rd.

Tom Parker kept his 88 going for the weekend to take the 88cc class win over Michael Lyons, who won the last three races of the event.  Joe Parker came home in third.

The 110cc class proved entertaining and it was Oscar Stearn who came away with the title.  Stearn impressed over the whoop section being one of only a handful of riders to double the tricky section. Matt Holcombe will feel hard done by though, as in the first race his back wheel adjuster snapped meaning a DNF, which cost him valuable points, and even a trio of race wins to end the weekend couldn’t give him victory and he had to settle for 3rd, behind a consistent James Dutton who in his own inter class battle with cousin Louis took second spot.  One rider whose speed we only saw in the opening race was Matthew Pocock who took the race win but injured himself in the process and that was the last that was seen of him on track.

The ultra competitive 140cc class has some new contenders to the throne for 2018 with Blaine Blackwell stepping into the category.  Blackwell went on to take the 140 Nationals title but this doesn’t tell the whole story as he had to fight for it all of the way after some epic battles with Kris Ayres who showed some immense speed of his own, and he finished 2nd.  Last years 140 British Champ Ash Gorman rode smooth the whole weekend long for third whilst Louis Dutton marked his Adult debut with 4th.

The Vets scorechart shows 5 straight wins for Chris Rose, but Jason Gutteridge who followed Rose home for second on each occasion kept the leader on his toes in every race.  Full credit to Rose who used his experience to hold his nerve and sustain the pressure on each occasion and deservedly won the title from Gutteridge in second. MBC Stalwart Colin Blackwell put in another consistent performance for 5 third places and a place on the Nationals box.

A depleted Masters field saw Dave Goldsmith win the title over Jake Speller with Lee Mitchell only showing up for the last three races all of which he won, but that was only enough for third overall.

A packed Clubman class saw Ash Arrowsmith become the Nationals Champion in this category.   After the first day it was Tom Crowder who headed the leader board but a DNF in his 4th race put pay to his title hopes and relegated him to 3rd overall.  Robert Johnson pushed hard all weekend and had some epic scraps with Arrowsmith and well and truly earned his second overall.

The tides may be turning in the Expert class with a some new names taking the plaudits.  Riding a factory Bucci Troy Beck showed immense speed as did fellow Bucci mounted rider Blaine Blackwell.   Reigning British Champion Brad Pocock was looking to get his season off to a winning start but a first race crash saw him pull out for the weekend, leaving Beck and Blackwell to battle it out at the front of the field.  Is was Beck who was the early pace setter taking the first 3 victories but a disqualification in his fourth race due to missing the start, and a superb ride from Blackwell, who showed his liking to the technical track in the last race gave Blaine the title with Beck in second.  Another rider who thoroughly deserved his spot on the podium was Jody Burton who had some great battles with Kris Ayres.  Burton will be happy with his third overall and he will be one to watch when the British Minibike Champs launches into life.

On top of the individual racing the Nationals also acts as a Team Event and this years winners were Pitbike Cambridge over the 2nd placed Canadian Spa/MJV Autos team, with Miniature Parts in third.

All eyes now look towards the opening rounds of the Minibike British Championships which takes place at Mildenhall Motoparc, in Suffolk on April 21st and 22nd.
