Feature Team – Bennett Hughes Sidecar Grasstrack Team

by adminFebruary 20, 2017

Our next Feature Team are the Bennett Hughes Grasstrack Sidecar Race team who have a stacked season of racing
lined up for 2017.

Here’s a bit about the team.

Barrie Bennett has been racing Grasstrack since 1991. He tried his hand at 250cc solos & 1000cc sidecars before settling in the 500cc sidecars. Over the years Barrie has had a few passengers. Up until 2004 he’d had 4 passengers with his last one retiring due to a reoccurring broken collar bone. Without a passenger Barrie was in hope of recruiting a new passenger to compete with. He used local media to find someone who was interested to race with. After a post in the local newspaper (The County Times) he came into contact with Eifion Hughes. Eifion was rural born and raised and loved to do nothing more than ride, build and experiment with anything mechanical on his mother’s farm. He was look for a new challenge so he applied to be Barrie’s passenger. Racing began and Eifion was thrown into the deep end and adapted very very well. Soon they were travelling further and further racing and gained a reputation as a much respected crew. Both men had families that grew closer during the years. The oldest sons of the crew started following the pair acting as mechanics. After years of racing between the two the sons soon took to the reality that they would follow their fathers into competing. In the off season of 2016 a 2nd bike was built for Louis and Shaun to use and they grasped their opportunity. After crashing hard at their first meeting they were able to pull together a string of results which turned a few heads in the 500cc sidecar Class. Finishing 3rd at Southend’s Donut meeting, 7th out of 16 at Fenlands Super Series, 6th out of 12 at the Frittenden’s Flyer & 1st at Chelmsford’s Super Series support class. 2016 was also the year that Barrie made a return to his 1000cc sidecar days along with Eifion.
