Fantastic finale! Acerbis Amateur Nationals Round 8 – Race Report and Results

by adminSeptember 17, 2018

The Acerbis Amateur Nationals has travelled from the uppermost parts of the UK, over to Ireland and down to the depths of the West Country to crown their 2018 champions, and it all culminated in the final round at the weekend in the Welsh valley circuit of Pontrilas.

Dylan Spencer has had a stunning 2018 in the 125 2 Stroke class, and with three good Saturday moto’s the title was in the bag, which meant he didnt need to compete on Sunday.  Wildcard racer Chris Povey was in superb form and after an opening moto fourth he recorded wins in the four other races during the weekend to take the win.  Fellow wildcard Rian Warren showed his liking for the Pontrilas circuit, while Stu Owen finished third, which was enough for him to take runners up spot in the series.

In the 250 2 Stroke Open class Cody Ling knew that a solid weekend would be enough for him to take the class title, and after a moto 1 scare he pulled it together to finish 4th on the day and take take the Championship by 37 points. Bradley Wheeler has been in sublime form in the last three rounds of the series and once again powered to the overall with 4 moto wins, ahead of Wildcard Ash Harland in second and Olly Jones in third. Jones would finish third in the series with Curtis Dixon putting up a good fight in second.

Mixed in with the 2 Stroke open was a plethora of EVO classes.  Daryle Hall screamed to a maximum in the Super Evo class as did West Country racer Dean Bachelor in the Evo 125’s. Matty Solf wrestled his big 500, to the Evo 500 win, while Dave Downworth replicated that feat by taking the Evo 250 victory.

Ros Fegan took the fight to Jordan Toland in the Junior Open class, and nerves were jangling as they lined up for their final moto. A top half finish would secure the crown for Toland, and that’s just what he did, easing his way home in 7th to take the title, and well deserved too. Fegan must take credit for never giving up, and his win in the final moto meant he took home the round 8 overall and second in the championship. James Chandler put in a season best performance for second, while Luke Price also ended his season with a flourish in third.

The Vets Over 40 category was always going to be hard fought with the top two going hammer and tongs at it all season long. Throw in the class act of Brian Wheeler you knew you were going to be in for some epic racing from these old dogs! Apart from the two rounds that he has missed, Wheeler has been close to unstoppable and that was again the Brian that showed up at Pontrilas taking all four moto victories to claim the overall. The dual behind Wheeler is where most eyes were planted though, as with only a slender championship lead, Richard Collins knew he had to be on guard to fend off the attacking Danny Blakely who had the title on his mind. The duo swapped positions in each moto but it was Collins who gained the upper hand for second on the day, which took him over the line in the championship giving him the overall title, from Blakely who finished just points over the 8 round series.

Tanisha Thomas continued on the same path for the 8th and final round of the Ladies Championships, taking both the overall on the day and the series win. Charlotte Hall did steal a win from Thomas though, and went on for second on the day ahead of Melanie Griffiths in third. Griffiths would finish the season second in the standings with Kady Moore 4th.

In the Vets Over 50 class Chris Brown came to Pontrilas with one hand on the Trophy, but in Motocross anything can happen and you would forgive him for taking it easy, collecting enough points for the title and enjoying the celebrations. Brown though had other idea’s, and resting on his laurels wasn’t in his game plan, as he stormed the field to take a clean sweep of moto wins for the day overall, and justifiably the Championship crown. Warren B, the long lost cousin of rapper Warren G, rode well for second over the weekend with Rob Prosser in third. Prosser would finish the championships in second ahead of Simon Bracey in third.

Over in MX1 it was tight at the top, and with only 17 points to play with Ed Briscoe needed to be on top of his game. His closest challenger Lewis Meadow’s had the bit between his teeth and clawed back 4 points on the Saturday to keep himself well in the hunt going into Sunday’s moto’s. Briscoe woke on Sunday in a firey mood and blitzed to three Moto win’s, the weekend overall and the MX1 title after a hard fought season with Meadows, who ended the day second and in the series. Not far from the top two was Andy Wilson, and his Moto 1 win put the cat among the pigeons, and he was 3rd overall at Pontrilas and in the Championship standings.

Round 8 may have belonged to the wildcards in MX2, but the plaudits went to Scott Hamilton who fended off his championship rivals to take the title with a third on the day.  Ahead of him Josh Taylor, moto 1 apart, looked the part and feasted on 4 race wins for the weekend win, with another wildcard Josh Bunter in second. Rob Ainley edged out Troy Jones for fourth and in doing so Ainley secured second position in the Championships, with Mitchel Meadows third, and Jones in fourth.

Once again it’s been a spectacular season of racing in the Acerbis Amateur Nationals, who sure know how to put on a fantastic race series, and we look forward to covering it again in 2019.  Well done to all of the riders who took part and congrats to all of those who were crowned Champion.

A big thank you must go to Matthew Rudd for supplying us with his excellent photos from each round and every round.
