RAW Riders of Steel…. Raw Enduro 6 Hour Team Challenge – Race Report & Results

by adminJune 12, 2018

Wayne Braybrook has been running Team Enduro’s for years; his experience always shines through when he creates the perfect course for the longer gruelling events to test riders and machines. Sunday’s 6 Hour Team Challenge was no exception; the event ran like clockwork in fantastic weather conditions. Riders and families once again showed support for the RAW Challenge as another packed paddock soaked up the June Sunshine.

A great turn out for the Youth Support race saw Bert Boam and Hayden Stansfield having a great mid race battle in Youth B before Stansfield upped the pace to gain a two minute lead at the flag from Boam. Sam Boyd was overall winner in Youth A after he too was put under some pressure by second placed Tommy Shevels on his 101 bike. Credit where credit is due, Jack Houghton completed 4 laps of the full course on his KTM 50 auto to win the junior class.

With the start area packed full of riders waiting for the Le Mans Style start, a full safety briefing was given to all riders before the event started. Riders were flagged away onto the 14 minute average lap one row at a time, it was clear that the pace was going to be hot from the start.

Paul Daley Smith

The event was made up mainly of two man relay teams, this is always the choice for most riders giving teams a chance to formulate race strategies during the event competing against other 2 man teams. Solo Ironmen and women simply grind it out for 6 hours straight which is no mean feat.

Simon Tate ran out as overall winner in the Sportsman solo class from RAW regular Mark Cockfield in second place. D3 KTM mechanic Ben Sayer still on his return to full fitness did a great job to finish third on the day. Sportsman Team honours went to Phil Dodsworth and Matty Baldwin one clear lap up on runner up team of Carl Welford and Jake Rewcastle. Father and Son duo of Adrian and Finlay Horsley took overall honours in the Novice Team class as the pair built a healthy lead over Simon Collins and Will Hick. Sarah Thomas and Simone Wallis certainly used Girl power to credit themselves with a fine third place and very well deserved result. Local lad Stevie Fitzsimmons grabbed a great Novice solo win, once again stand out performance of the day goes to Abbie Piggott taking runner up in the Novice class. Army PT instructor James Clark battled hard for six hours to credit himself with a fine third in class.

Wayne Braybrook

Track conditions hardly changed all race, and with a new Extreme (time saving) loop for the more technically advanced riders to choose, it was Wayne Braybrook and his team mate Lewis Moore who grabbed the Expert Team class win on the Colin Appleyard FE350. Braybrook doing two 1.5 hour stints enjoyed riding with club members on a rare outing despite running out of fuel just 100 metres from the pits! Out of retirement Dan Lappin teamed up with his pal Robbie Wallace to run a hard fought second place, narrowly edging out Marc Vardy and Dominic Richardson by just 30 seconds at the flag. Brad Lilburn loves the longer races; his Expert Solo win was more like the kind of form he’s capable of on his Moto4 125 Husky.

D3 KTM rider Burt Crayston grabbed the bull by the horns to finish the long 6 hours solo race in runner spot up just one lap ahead of Expert Vet Mark Raynor in third. Perhaps the most competitive class of the was the Vets, Kev Hipwell and Stu Day carried on where they left off at Round one with a great overall vets team win. Neil Crayston and local rider John Bradford teamed up to have a thoroughly enjoyable day placing runner up, Whilst fresh from Erzberg Mark Fenwick and Jonathan Ellis rounded out the podium. Paul Daley Smith cleaned up in the vets solo class on his Sherco, Martin Thomas working nights only got 3 hours sleep Saturday night so he had to dig deep for his Vets runner up trophy. RAW Regular Andy Williams was more than happy to get the final vets podium place on the day.

Joel Sadler

Finally the Clubman Solo class was won by Matt Parkinson who’s current form sees him in with a great chance of the overall clubman solo win if he takes a strong finish at the 8 hour in August. Extreme trainee Jamie Williams used the event for endurance training and in doing so grabbed second place from Adam Mulholland who was delighted to get a finish despite still having issues with his damaged wrist. The Acklams Beta dream team of Joel Sadler and Josh Snowden won the Clubman team class from best pals Neil Marshal and Ben Walker.

The whole atmosphere at RAW Challenge events is one, which surrounds riders and families alike with total enjoyment and a relaxed yet competitive competition. Well done to each and every rider who took part, gratitude to family and friends for cheering on and supporting their riders, make sure you are all there on August 19th when the biggest test yet unfolds, the RAW WAR 8 hour Challenge!!

Gratitude as always to everyone who plays a part in the success of RAW Enduro as the club establishes its reputation for providing top end events for all level of riders.
