On the Winters Edge! Edge Offroad Winter Warmer XC Round 3 – Race Report & Results

by adminDecember 8, 2017

Winter Warmer Cross Country Round 3 with Edge Offroad, was held at the awesome Parkwood Offroad Centre, Tong, Nr Bradford on Sunday December 3rd. The Edge Crew manages to put on yet another new track for this popular little series, there was something for everyone as promised!

Saturday saw another popular practise day; these are great for anyone wanting to ride their bike with any competition involved. Enough riders attended to put a clear line in for the Sundays event, but yet nothing was spoilt either. The Edge guys and girls didn’t want to put anything too extreme in; but yet it was challenging enough to put smiles on everyone’s faces.

Ailbe OConnell

For the Sunday, the Kids entry had increased from the last time Edge visited Tong. They rode a shortened loop of the Adults course but yet this was still good enough for all the riders. Young Southerner, John Stanley got the holeshot from Cory Cookland. John had travelled all the way from Hampshire on Saturday morning for this fun packed weekend with Edge Offroad. These two had a great battle all race, with Cory actually leading most of it. But after a few tumbles by both of them, John managed to get the overall win by just over a minute  on 12 laps. In the Juniors there was another battle going on between Hayden Stansfield and Harry Walker. This time out Harry got on with the job in hand and didn’t let the winter coldness effect him. But after an hour and a quarter Hayden had the better of him and took the win, both finishing on 10 laps, with Hayden taking the

Bert Crayson

chequered flag with a minute between them. Ailbe Oconnell didn’t have his best day out with a few tumbles, but still secured third on 8 laps ahead of young Charlie Page, who had a few mechanical problems, but took fourth on 6 laps. Youth A ended with only one finisher – it’s a great way for Emily to get to grips with the Enduro scene to be fair, and she plodded around at her own pace, and had a good ride getting 7 laps in under her belt taking the win!

Once the Kids race had finished, Clerk of the Course Dan Bewlay, got his track team to make the relevant changes for the Adult event. Blessed by Mr Sunshine again for the start at 11am sharp! With a great turn out of riders for this Winter event, it was a case of who was going to get the holeshot from the mass turn out of Expert riders! Once the flag dropped, it was “Mechanic to the Worlds No 1 Extreme Enduro Rider’s” turn for the limelight – Mr Damo Butler! Followed very closely by 15 other Experts! There was no way Sam “Ludders” Ludgate was letting Damo get away, and sure enough at the end of the first lap he was in front, and lead for the whole race taking the overall win by 18 seconds. Joe Deakin got T-boned early doors by Phill Hancock, but this didn’t

Jack Stafford

put the No. 1 Edge team rider off, who just got his head down and fought his way back to a good second place overall. Damo’s determination shown through right until the end; feeling a tad unfit as he’s always on “Jarvis Duties”, but having some time off with GJ in the States, Damo was chuffed that he managed to grab the last spot on the podium.

In the Expert Vets class there was again another good turn out. Alex Owen has dominated this class all year, but knew on this day he might have his work cut out. Mark Houson was in front for part of the race, swapping between him, David Haith and Alex numerous times. In the end Alex took the win with 18 seconds separating him and Mark, in second, and David took third.

The Clubman class was also well supported and going to be another close battle. Jamie Williams dithered on the start line as to what class he wanted to be in, but with the lap top already

Simon Nutter

loaded ready to go, he manned it with the Clubman and got a good start. So good that he lead right up until the end of the eighth lap when he got passed by Lee Stansfield. No doubt the age and experience stood Lee in good stead, and with his experience he held the lead until the finish, with a big gap between him and Jamie, Jamie securing second and Richard Hawes a minute behind him in third.

The Clubman Vets class wasn’t a bad turn out, nice to see some old, friendly faces too! Simon Nutter had a mega ride out, first time with Edge, but thoroughly enjoyed it and took the win, and squeezed the extra lap in just before the flag went out, finishing on 11 laps. Trevor Harvey was second on 10 laps and Shaun Woffinden was third just over a minute behind Trevor.

Sportsman was very well supported, seeing some new faces, no doubt all getting ready for the Extreme season to start! Young Robert Crayston took the win in his class, having thought

Alex Owen

he’d only had an “ok” ride – not a bad day at the office for the D3 KTM Sponsored rider from Cumbria. Mattias Svensson took second spot 40 seconds behind, and Lee Crookes had an awesome day helping his overall points for the Series taking third, all finishing on 10 laps.

Sportsman Vets was also very well supported, best turn out all year! Pete Whiteside took a comfortable win on 10 laps from Neil Myers, with Nick Barrow rounding out the podium in third, all on 10 laps.

The Over 50’s class was very quiet for a change, clearly these guys don’t really like the winter months! But nothing puts Geraint Rogers off his riding and he was very happy to take the win in his class on 10 laps , with a very happy Nigel “Foxy” Fox behind him and a lap down in second, and returning from retirement, Brian Roper took third.

In the Novice class there was a great turn out again – Jack Stafford took the win on 9 laps after not riding for six years. Jack had no idea how well he would do so was absolutely over the moon to last two hours, never mind take the win! Andrew Barker was also chuffed to bits to take second spot home with him, and Louis Yates rounded out the podium – both finishing on 9 laps.

Well done to all that took part, it was a great day. All in all a fantastic weekend had by all. A massive thanks to all the riders, to all the Edge marshals and all the supporters. These events couldn’t happen without your continued support.

The next event is the last one of the year – Winter Warmer 4, on Saturday December 16th Practice Day; followed by race day on Sunday December 17th. The venue is Catterick Moto Complex, DL10 7LF. Entries are open now – get booked in! Event mobile is 07557 447084; please text or call. Or alternatively you can book in online www.edgeoffroad.events or book in via the Facebook page.
