Jack the Lad at Ruthin. WOR Events Putoline National Hare Scrambles Round 3 – Race Report, Results & Highlights

by adminJune 4, 2018

The PUTOLINE NHS series from WOR Events blasted into the beautiful setting of Llywn Ynn Hall in Ruthin, North Wales last weekend. This is a very special venue with simply amazing course set in the old gardens and parklands of a fallen ancient mansion.

On arrival, the lush green paddock and picturesque stream running around the old ruins gives a tranquil and warm feeling and a false sense of security for the riders that they may be in for a bimble around the rolling fields, The actual fact of the matter is that once the riders have negotiated the nice grass special test type fields the green and lovely woodlands then become brutal, rock ridden, slippery rooted trails of technical riding that only riders that plan and prep can tackle with speed and pace to stay strong for the duration of the race. The Llwyn Ynn Hall really is a unique type of terrain that adds a superb variation into this superb championship that offers so many diverse locations and venues in its 9 rounds.

The feedback from the knackered riders at the end of the event was 100% positive with those that took on and battled the draining race in the heat and humidity totally feeling satisfied with their performances and well-earned results and finishes and in a lot of cases, valuable series points.

One of those riders that simply loved the course and what it offered was Yamaha 250 2T Mounted Expert Rider, Jack Ditchfield. Jack won the event outright with a superb ride of speed and stamina for 2.5hrs and put a Japanese machine at the top step of a WOR Event for the first time in a long, long time. Young Jack was relentless in his pursuit of the glory, but he did not have it all his own way as a Flying Gethin Humphreys, fresh from his Saturday night Nail Biter Extreme Enduro win, was in unstoppable form. Humphreys took the lead from lap one and was comfortably out in front on his Sherco but with 45 mins to go disaster struck and the 2t Sherco suffered an electrical fault causing a very unhappy Gethin into an undeserved DNF through bike failure. A very disappointed and angry Gethin returned to the pits which then allowed the hard charging pair of Tim Forman (Beta) and Jack “Ditchy” to battle through for the front place which Forman held for a short while before a crash let Jack through and the Yamaha just pulled away then to secure a very deserved overall event win in the top class. The top 3 experts covered 17 laps in the 2.5hrs with Ditchfield finishing almost exactly 2 minutes ahead of Forman with Husqvarna 300 mounted Connor Bollsover a further 6 minutes and 10 seconds down on Forman in third place. A real mix on the podium.

The Clubman class was won by Archie Collier on his Freestyle Husqvarna. This 16-year-old is starting to ride superbly, week in, week out and his total domination of the class with a clear 5 minute plus advantage over Runner Up, David Blackburn (KTM) shows that young Collier is one to keep an eye on for sure as he is climbing the WOR ranks at a steady rate of knots indeed. Its no mean feat to win the Clubman class as it is always hotly contested as you would expect with it being the group that is one step away from the Experts. Blackburn is a new recruit to the scene having come from MX and he is turning his hand to the Hare Scrambles Enduros superbly as he again progressed through to beat 3rd placed WOR Clubman superstar, Paul Engerlen (KTM) by just 16 seconds. Engerlen had indeed been the leader for the first few laps, a testament to how quick young Collier had indeed been travelling to win by the margin he did. Well done all Clubman riders especially those top 3 all finishing on 16 laps each.

Lincoln Brewster is on the comeback trail and is battling to get his fitness back to those heady days of when he won, won, won every WOR Event he entered overall, He now is in the Vets A group and pushed hard to take a well earned win in the group by nearly 4 minutes from Gary McCoy, McCoy again making the 7 hour trip up from Devon to “do a WOR” and showing at over 50 odd that he’s still prepared to mix it with the Expert Vets. 3rd place Vets A went to the always consistent and fit, Anthony Griffith. Griffith tackling the demanding track with the strength and determination required to go home with silverware. The top 3 Vets A all completed 16 laps to their credit.

The 3 classes above all completed 2.5hrs with the rest of the classes all doing a 2 hours race time and topping the 2-hour sector was Over 50’s rider, Chris Wagstaff. Waggy is a new convert to the Over 50’s class and is doing what he did in the Vets A as he is winning that group in the races he competes in. The Shrewsbury based Yamaha rider did in fact pass all the Clubman and Vets A riders at the 2-hour mark as his race finished, showing no signs of slowing up at all. Runner up was Gareth Lloyd; The CF Racing Husqvarna Boss was riding superbly as his comeback from a lengthy break from riding continues to see the 57-year-old regain his speed as the races go on. Waggy and Lloyd where the only riders in the 2-hour race to complete 13 laps of the course. Third place dover 50 was Stephen Parry from Liverpool with 12 hard earned circuits to his credit.

Top VET’s B was Paul Lightfoot on his new 350f Husqvarna that seems to suit the big fella down to the ground. Lighty lit up the class with 12 lap score and an almost 3-minute advantage over Runner up and his main rival in the class, Anthony Foulkes. Nigel Lynn made a Husqvarna 1,2,3 in the VETs B with 12 laps and just 13 seconds down on Foulkesy. Lynn deserves a special mention for his performance after riding to a shattering Runner up in the previous night’s Nailbiter Extreme.

Sportsman Honours went to KTM 2t mounted Tom Lawton, at last getting just rewards for his 100% effort in every event. A visit to the top step of the podium was just deserts for the likeable Staffordshire based rider whom is another young pilot coming through and showing good promise. Lawton held the class lead from start to finish keeping Runner Up, Adam Bates on his spanking new 250f Husqvarna at bay and finishing 38 seconds in front come the end of the 2 hours. 3rd placed, Bronze Sportsman award went to another up and coming Youngster, Sion Hughes. The North Wales youngster showing riding class way ahead of his young years to again make the Sportsman podium, albeit 1 minute and 28 seconds down on Bates. All the top 9 Sportsman completed 12 laps.

Lee Anderton continues his transition from MX to Hare Scrambles with another top step performance in the Novice class, Lee completed 11 laps and took a 27 second advantage over Runner Up, Simon Jones. Simon in turn taking a further 59 seconds from Alan Jones in the Bronze podium slot.

The Entire solo entry deserves a big shout out for completing this Gruelling round of the series and the heat and humidity certainly made the job harder. Well done to all and a very well done to Jack Ditchfield on the overall win.
