In for the Long Haul! Edge Offroad Motul Long Edge Enduro Series Round 1 – Race Report & Results

by adminApril 17, 2018

After five months of virtually non-stop rain across most of the UK, the weather conditions at Catterick Moto Complex in North Yorkshire at the weekend were remarkably good for a change!

A new course plotted by the Edge crew was laid on to give the Moto Complex a completely different feel for the first round of this new Motul Long Edge Series. Riders came from as far away as Scotland and Hampshire just to get a rain free ride, with the temperature around 15 degrees, the track rode perfectly, which resulted in smiles all round.

The first action of the day in the Motul event, was for the Youth riders who were in for a two hour long battle. Ryan Stoneley took the Solo Junior top spot on 11 laps with Ailbe Oconnell in second on 10 laps. Super quick John Stanley won the Solo Youth class after runaway leader Alex Leadbetter found a false neutral on the hill after lap scoring, thus letting John passed. John suffered a run in with a pheasant on his second lap, but managed to grab the win on 14 laps, Alex taking second on 13 laps and Thomas Simpson, on his second ride out was chuffed to bits to take third place home.

The Motul sponsored 3 Hour Adult Ironman and Tag Team event was packed with talent across all classes. The Expert/Clubman team class ended up with a good bunch of riders competing. The great spectacle with these team events is when a team is made up of one super quick and one quick rider. This is awesome to watch from the sidelines as advantages can be gained and lost over the period of time out on track.

Lee Sampson grabbed the holeshot from Edge team rider Dan Bewlay, followed by Edge team rider Dan Leadbetter into the first corner. Their team mates could only watch from the changeover area as Bewlay came round first at the end of the first lap, followed by Sampson and then Leadbetter. Each team having different strategies meant the positioning kept changing – having the live timing certainly created a massive buzz for all riders and their pit crews alike. In the end Bewlay, who hadn’t ridden a race for nearly a year, took the win with his team mate Scott “Reggie Mac” Altass with a 45 second lead on second place Edge team riders Deakin and Leadbetter – both teams finishing on 26 laps, third place went to a slightly injured Lee Sampson and Tom Weston on 25 laps. In the Team Vets class Ste Thornton and Mick Savin took the win from John Steeples and Matt Baldwin – both finishing on 21 laps. Ricky Downs and Jonny Balfour were over the moon to take the Sportsman Team winning spot, from Jordan Maxwell and Darren Bailey both teams finishing on 21 laps, third place went to Matt Holmes and Jordan Duckett. In the Team Novice class Reece Kyle and Chris Rothwell were delighted to take the win on 18 laps. Steve Easters and Steve Tyson, who had never even ridden a race before took second place home on 16 laps and Adam Lumb and Ben Scholes took third on 13 laps

Vince Harker

Solo 3 hour riders are always the brave ones, Stevie Fitzsimmons had an easy win in the Solo Novice class on 20 laps with Dean Hall taking second home on 19 laps and a happy Lee Dollimore secured third place on 15 laps. Max Wordingham took a well deserved win in the Solo Sportsman class, followed in 22 seconds later by Steve Butterfield and Levi Walters 30 seconds later in third, all on 20 laps! In the Solo Vets class, Vince Harker got a late entry in and easily took the win on 24 laps, with Edge regulars Alex Owen in second on 23 laps and Andy Dean in third place on 22 laps. The Solo Clubman class saw the return of young Liam Crowe who was determined to get a win under his belt on his new D3 KTM, and after a hard slog and consistency he took a well deserved win on 22 laps by 10 seconds! Adam Jordan was second and then Joe Allison rounded out the podium on 19 laps. Finally in the Expert Solo event Jamie Dilworth managed to finish an event, but not only that he took a fantastic win due to his consistency on the course and completed 24 laps, beating Ben Thomson by just over two minutes and Ben Pattinson took third home on 21 laps.

In light of the recent weather conditions, the event ran like clockwork and it was fantastic to see so many smiling faces with such a great atmosphere. Many thanks to everyone, especially to all the Edge marshals for helping out all weekend.
