Freeman Master of the Lakes. Rock Oil Hare & Hounds Championship Round 7 – Race Report and Results

by adminAugust 22, 2017

The New Three Lakes Enduro near Doncaster hosted round 7 of the Rock Oil Championship. Having Sole race use of the land Wayne Braybrook set about creating the perfect Hare & Hounds track to grace the 2017 Rock Oil Championship. As always he aims to find the best riders over a season on all terrain, three lakes delivered a sand fest, which saw some rider’s struggle having never ridden sand, others loved the race if they had some previous experience.

For the first time this season RAW Enduro added a Pro class to the event weekend, with riders like Brad Freeman, Luke Flack, Sam Winterburn Alex Walton Jack Rowland and Ted Bailey all in attendance, the eagle eyed spectators watched the jaw dropping speed which these top British and World contenders could carry in the deep sandy conditions.

Race one for a small Youth entry saw Cory Cookland winning the Youth B group by a clear lap from his nearest rival Sam Boyd. Tommy Tate continues to improve on his Husky 85 taking third on the day. Jamie Williams took the youth A win after early leader Richard Moorhouse had a big crash that thwarted his progress in the latter stages of the race.

A Packed start area for the first adult race saw a 5 minute delay when a keen eyed RAW traveling Marshal had spotted a tree stump which was considered to be in potentially a dangerous place, prompt removal of the stump in the interest of rider safety then allowed the event to start.

Cole Cookland was one of the last Sportsman riders to leave the start line, having to overcome a tangle with a tree left him work to do. His MX skills came to the fore as the local lad blitzed the opposition taking a well-earned win. This event being a selection event for a vacant place on the RAW Enduro team saw Lancastrian Dan Leadbetter racing at RAW to see how his speed was. Leadbetter took a solid second place impressing the RAW talent scouts around the Three lakes track. Isaac Archer has made a great transition from MX to enduro; the tall lad again from Lancashire was the only other sportsman rider on 11 laps. Holeshot man Liam Ryde narrowly missed out staying on the lead lap after a heavy crash slowed his pace in the second half of the race.

Sportsman Vets winner David Williamson did a great job to take the win, surprisingly with limited sand experience Mark Cockfield took a very well earned runner up place just pipping Jonathan Ellis by seven seconds at the flag. Burt Crayston took his D3 KTM to the Novice Class win; early leader Lewis Moore was kicking himself at the flag after leading for a lot of the race. Even so Lewis was delighted with his best RAW Enduro result in a class field of riders. Andrew Dean was another rider to overcome a shocking start to take the over 50 class win, Andrew Maben placed runner up in the old lads class, with D3 Boss Neil Crayston finishing third after riding the previous day at the British Extreme Championship.

After the routine break for morning event results and presentation the Talent packed start area saw the more experienced riders competing on a track which although being testing it held up really well. Only one additional harder loop for the PM race was added just to keep the faster riders in check.

Beta Boano Rider Brad Freeman used this event as a training exercise as he prepares for the British Enduro GP. First back to lap scoring in just under ten minutes Brad never looked back, two cool well planned fuel stops saw Brad impressing his fellow Pro riders and spectators with his speed and ability on his 2018 Beta RR. MPS Sherco rider Luke Flack worked hard all race, running P3 around a minute down on D3 Racing rider Sam Winterburn until the penultimate lap, Flack took advantage of Winterburn’s rear wheel collapsing to place runner up. Winterburn still managed to cross the line to take third on the day. Steve Plain Beta rider Alex Walton pressed hard all race to keep on the pace of his more experienced Pro Class opposition. Lee Harrison used his MX skills and set up to take the Clubman class win, local lad Lewis Ellis placed runner up after a tree hugging incident and still leads the Clubman championship. Tom Weston pressed on all race to take a great third place on the day. Clubman Vets rider Lee Pallet out on a borrowed KTM MX bike won the class, James Cooke Thomas was the only other Clubman Vet rider to complete 12 laps, considering JCT had never ridden on sand this was a fair ride. In the regular RAW Expert class Lee Sampson took his MRS Sherco to a great win on a track he knows well. Zac Sherwin extended his RAW Championship lead by finishing second despite having not ridden his bike for weeks. Danny Culkin was another rider to overcome a BIG crash, a pit stop to straighten his machine left him with two choices, either roll the sleeves up and get stuck in or go home. The Gritty lad from east Yorkshire got on with the job to credit to himself with a solid third place despite a very sore arm and shoulder.

After a busy week of preparation the RAW organisation were rewarded with a fantastic turn out of competitors at this new venue. Yet another new venue will grace the Championship on September 9th/10th, a return to a traditional farm venue at Colne near Laneshaw Bridge on the Yorkshire Lancashire border where round 8 will be there for everyone to enjoy. Massive thanks to all the people who assist in the running of RAW Enduro events, roll on Round 8!
