Four Score Houson! Raw Enduro Challenge Series 4 Hour – Race Report & Results

by adminApril 13, 2018

RAW Enduro are now into their 4th year of running high-end Enduro events in the north of England. A big part of the events schedule is the RAW Challenge series. Traditionally 4,5 and six hour races. Wayne Braybrook has raised the bar for 2018, making it almost out reach for most by upping the race duration to 4 hours for round one, then 6 and 8 for rounds two and three. The end result is that riders ARE up for the challenge and they voted with their feet at Butts Quarry on April 8th.

First up a small Youth 2 hour mini iron-kid race for the enthusiastic RAW youth members.  Brandon Burns had a great weekend at Butts, his trials and MX skills came forward to help him take the Youth A win. Jackson Simpson was runner up, with Reece Major getting his first RAW trophy in third. RAW Team rider Bert Boam was on great form from the off, not only taking the `youth B win, but also the overall Youth win was a stunning ride for the lad based in Derbyshire. Hayden Stansfield still getting used to his bigger bike was on a mission and he was rewarded with a solid runner up place. Harry Walker got his first RAW trophy in Youth B after grinding out a third place finish, despite riding over half the race with a underpowered sick engine and a flat tyre!!

Brandon Burns

Onto the main Adult 4 hour, and the Le Mans Style start area was packed full of eager riders. Some riders going solo for 4 hours, other riders opted for the two-man relay team class option. Track conditions around butts Quarry were near perfect, tacky clay on the MX track, a wet almost flooded Quarry basin, and some nice technical woodland going made up the 8 minute lap. Hats off to Expert Ryan Staveley for taking on 4 hours solo and grabbing the overall win overall as well. Respect to the lad from Lancashire. Gav and Mark Houson both rode team experts and were rewarded with a win in that class. Rhys and James Yates were runners up, with riding pals John Steeples and Josh Bailey thoroughly enjoying their days racing with a solid third place. Clubman Solo honours went to Rich Heslop on 31 laps completed. Graham Dickinson continues to settle into his new love of 4t power taking his  350 Husky to a fine runner up finish. Sportsman Solos were as competitive as ever, Simon Tate took the overall class win with Steven Butterfield super happy with his runner up place. Thomas Bradshaw returned from his holidays to net a great third in class getting his title aspirations off to a good start.

Bert Boam

Stand out performance of the Race was Abbie Piggott in the Novice solo class. In her first year of adult competition, runner up place in a tough 4-hour race made the whole family and team as proud as anyone! When asked after the race how tough it was, her reply was, “well I got a bit tired but it was ok” Gentlemen take note… She’s on a mission!! Steve Fitzsimmons was a worthy winner in class and already has plans to move up the classes as he improves. Army man James Clark took third place after two-stroke move during winter sees him far more settled in the Novice group. Simon Collins and Will Hick were delighted to win in the novice team class, ending two laps ahead of Stuart Broadhurst and Gary Dowd. Gary Morley did his graft to win the solo Vets class, Lee Allis Smith was runner up, Rob Gregory desperately wanted to do the team class option, but a final decision was taken to go solo, as tough as it was Rob was delighted with his third place finish. Factory Kev Hipwell and his old trials Mate Stu Day had a right blast in the vets team class to take the win. RAW Regulars Mark Vardy and Andy Kirby fresh from high altitude training in Spain placed runner up, Nick Barrow and his team mate Paul Cunningham placed third in class.

Although Butts Quarry is a limited area available to work with, Wayne Braybrook used all his experience to once again plan a testing yet very enjoyable enduro track. RAW Staff had great feedback from riders on the day, with pretty much everyone already looking forward to June for round 2 the six-hour challenge!!

Kev Hipwell

Special tip of the cap goes to Barry Dring for prepping the ground in a way only he knows how to, well done to all riders, most of whom simply can’t all be mentioned in the report.

Gratitude as always to everyone who plays a part in the success of RAW Enduro as the club establishes its reputation for providing top end events for all level of riders.
