Edge Dig Deep at Kilburn. Edge Offroad Protect My Income Enduro Championships Round 2 – Race Report & Results

by adminApril 3, 2018

After the terrible weather that’s hit the country over the last few months, the Edge Crew were encouraged to get the Protect My Income Championship Rd 2 rolling by the landowner at his venue in Kilburn on Sunday as there was a break in the weather, believe it or not! Having assessed the site with him, and decided between him and them where the track was to go, the course was set out accordingly.

Race Report by Phoenix Media – Images courtesy of Neil Sturgeon and Allan Forsyth Photography.

The Kids got off to the toughest start first thing, running on a shorter version of the Adult track, but still having to contend with the first woodland as the Adults did, and in typical “kids style” they just gritted their teeth, dug deep and got on with it! The rain and snow shower on Sunday

Ailbe Oconnell

morning made conditions pretty tough for everyone, but especially these little ones. Once they got out of the woodland section they were up and out into the massive open stubble section, giving them a track that was suitable for them and their ability.

Ailbe Oconnell took the win in the Juniors on his little 65cc, he completed two laps of the tough course but he never gave in and fought until the end! Frank Skillin took the win in Youth A on a massive 7 laps completed, with Tom Slater in second on 6 laps and Ozzie Murray, who has come from Motocross, decided to use this event as his first ever enduro!! Ozzie was chuffed to bits to take the last place on the podium!

In Youth B Caitlin Winn was over the moon to take the third spot completing one full lap, with Edge rider Jak

Frank Skillin

Heaney in second on 6 laps – Jak has done mega to finish such a tough event considering it’s not been that long since his knee surgery! To top off the Youth B class, young John Stanley not only took the win but won overall on his Scott/Eurotek KTM85! Having worried all day Saturday about how tough the course was, John went out there and completed 8 laps! All the Youth had to do the same woodland at the start of the lap that the Adults had to do as it was the only way to join them into the open section at the top – these kids are an absolute credit to their parents and deserve such a pat on the back!

A lot of effort had gone in to this awesome venue to try and ensure yet another challenging track was on hand for all and every level of rider. A Championship has to have a mix of venues

Ozzie Murray

and severity for it to be fair for everyone throughout the year. But one thing we can’t control is what falls out of the sky, we don’t think anyone has mastered that technique just yet! So everyone should have known it was going to be a tough day at the office, but it was a case of digging deep and not giving in – there was Championship points to be had!

The first Adult race got underway on the longer 3.2 mile loop. With what was supposed to be a ram packed morning entry, it was disappointing to see only half on the start line. But none the less, this certainly was going to sort the men out from the boys!

Kris Munro dug deep, got on with the job in hand, dealt with it and won the Novice class, stating it was a proper

Kris Munro

enduro and the best race he’s ever ridden! Kris did 3 laps of this tough course. He was followed home by Robert Holmes who is new to riding enduro this year, a true Novice, Robert also did 3 laps and got the extra lap up on his brother Ryan, in third on 2 laps.

Jade Gordon won the Ladies class, closely followed by Brook Johnson, both completing one full lap. These Ladies really are hard as nails! And could teach the men a thing or two! Nigel Fox easily won the Over 50’s class – even with a broken finger on the hand that only has 3.5 fingers anyway! Foxy completed 5 laps, Jon Wadsworth made a return to riding and was chuffed with his 2nd place, completing 4 laps and Gary Court dug deep and secured third on three laps. Stef Butterworth decided to come and join the Edge crew and have a go in

Grant Gillender

the Sportsman Ves class – to his surprise he claimed top spot on 5 laps, followed in by Tim Reynolds on 4 laps and an over the moon Lee Hutsby in third on three laps. Grant Gillender’s extreme training and riding the Eddy’s Extreme British Championship, is paying off, this kind of event clearly suits his style of riding as he took the win in Sportsman on 6 laps! Jack Winn also decided to give the Sportsman class a go, and was beaming with pride with his second spot on 5 laps – absolutely awesome Jack, keep up the good work and build on your confidence! Tom Simpson just wanted to get back racing after having to miss the first round, so was well happy to take the third place on the podium on 5 laps too.

After some course alterations, and making sure all the tape was in place before the PM lads started, the event was

Jack Edmondson

behind schedule due to the delay from the AM lads over running. These PM lads had one extra, harder, extreme hill climb in, but it was even too much for some of these lads so was cut out and they were re directed onto the AM loop. Jack Edmondson made the journey up from the Midlands with his brother Harry. Jack ending up having no competition as Spike Gilby only completed one lap before pulling off, Edge team rider Joe Deakin having to work over the weekend, and then Scott Austin and Lee Sampson not fancying the muddy conditions! Jack really did make the whole event look like a main road, completing 8 laps, the lad is doing absolutely awesome and is clearly putting the hard work in that eventually gets you the results you deserve, well done lad! You never gave up even when young Harry gave you a run for your money off the start! Wil Westgarth kept pushing

Stefan Butterworth

hard all day and that also paid off as he took the Expert win from a back on form Declan Helliwell in second and returning from retirement AGAIN Scott Altass took third, all on 6 laps. Kyle Lapper was surprised to take the win in Clubman even though he was going to call it a day after the first lap, he ended up completing 4! Jordan Jones was happy as larry to take second also on 4 laps and Josh Atkinson was quietly pleased with third completing 2 laps. John Bradford was leading the PM Vets until his bike starting playing tunes to him! So he had to call it a day which left Alex Owen to secure the top spot on 4 laps – filling his bike up with Fanta to keep it going! Alex was followed in by hardcore rider Mark Raynor who did 3 laps, and then still relatively new to enduro, Ricky Tropman took a third spot on 3 laps!

Mark Houghton

A massive thanks and well done to all the riders that took part, a huge thank you must go to all the marshals that helped all day long, to the supporters and especially to the landowner for wanting it to run and helping out massively all weekend! Without landowners like this, events wouldn’t run.

Next event is the new 2018 Motul Long Edge Series – Solo/2 Man Tag Team Event at Westwood on Sunday 15th April, with a Practice Day on Saturday 14th April – all details on the website www.edgeoffroad.events – all prices on the “Contact Us” page. Let’s pray for some sunshine!
