Crowning Crookwood! MX Nationals Finale – Race Report and Results

by adminAugust 14, 2017

The MX National’s Finale was a weekend of crowing glory, not just in the Championship titles but also in the debut for the brand new Crookwood Motoparc venue which came through the weekend with plaudits a plenty.

We spoke in last previews of the 9 different championship titles up for grabs and as you can imagine with so much at stake the racing didn’t disappoint the fantastic crowd that turned out to see it.

What can you say about Graeme Irwin this season?  He has been virtually unstoppable and he railed his Buildbase Honda to a double moto win on his way to the Pro MX1 title.  Irwin’s dominance saw him take a amazing 7 race wins from 10 races and only once being out of the top 3 which was in his opening round of the season when he finished 4th.   Irwin’s Buildbase Honda team mate Martin Barr edged out Elliot Banks-Browne to runners up spot on the day after they both tied on points with a 2nd and 3rd apiece, with Barr taking the overall due to the 2nd in the final race.  It wasn’t enough for Barr to take 2nd spot overall though as Banks-Browne came back into form with a great season long performance, and the second podium spot.

No one will be disappointed that Revo Husqvarna’s Mel Pocock was crowned the Pro MX2 champion after battling back from career threatening injuries to stake his claim on the National title with strong performances at each and every round.  There were nervous times though after the opening MX2 race of the weekend when Pocock finished down the order whilst his closed rival Josh Gilbert went on to take the race win and reduce the deficit by a huge 13 points in one swoop.  Pocock though kept his composure to finish 2nd in the last moto to claim the title and the champagne celebrations.  The jubilation though wasn’t limited to the Revo Husqvarna camp as popular Privateer racer Josh Spinks won race 2 and coupled with his opening race third took the days overall win and the first Pro win of his career.  Gilbert finished the day 2nd overall whilst Lewis Tombs did enough to finish both 3rd on the day and overall in the series and grab a very credible spot on the MX Nationals Pro Podium.

It couldn’t have gotten any tenser in the Expert MX1 championship as throughout both days of racing the two title contenders Declan Whittle and Luke Parker were locked in battle.   Parker was on fire in the first three races taking the wins in each with Whittle pegged back to fourth in race one before following his rival home in 2nd in both the second and third races which culminated in the last race being a nail biting winner take all affair.  Parker went into the final race one point ahead, but Whittle put in a champions performance to pull a fantastic win out of the bag as the two battled it out with ferocious intensity for the race win.  With Whittle taking the win and Parker in 2nd behind him the 3 point swing was enough to see Whittle claim the title by just an agonizing two points ahead of his rival.  A huge congrats to both racers for putting on an awesome show all season long.

Coming into the series finale the Expert MX2 class was even closer with just 4 points between Glenn McCormick and Jake Sheriden.  The fight for the title though didn’t bear fruit as McCormick put in a sublime performance to take all 4 moto victories and the title ahead of Sheriden who finished 2nd on the day and runners up in the series.  Josh Coleman rode well again on the day for third overall and third in the championships standings at the end of the series.

The Clubman MX1 championship go the way of Sean Barnsdale who announced his retirement from the sport following his victory.  On the day though it was his closest challenger Danny Townsend who took the overall victory and 2nd in the championships.  Ben Cryer rode well throughout the weekend for 3rd on the day with Guy Prince coming home with the overall championship 3rd.

Eventual Clubman MX2 Champion Tony Cadman had a real scare as a below par performance by his standards saw him finish down the order with 6th overall whilst his main challenger Brad Thornhill rode superb for the overall win, but as the flag came down on the championship it wasn’t enough and Cadman took the title by 7 points.  Runner up of the day was Fabio Rizzi, with Elliot Cook, with 3rd place in the series going to Ryan King.

It was as you were in the MXYN 125 class as Rossi Beard put his Canada Heights DNF behind him to put on a sublime display of 2 stroke racing and a maximum 4 wins from 4 and the championship title.  Joel Rizzi fought hard all weekend for 2nd overall but it wasn’t enough to overhaul Sam Nunn for 2nd in the series as Nunn kept it cool for 3rd on the day.

The MXYN MX2 class was almost over bar the shouting with Lewis Hall leading the pack with an amazing run of victories which was only halted by a DNF in the tough conditions at Canada heights.  Hall wracked up another 3 wins to claim the title and the weekend win, but full credit to Ben Clark who was the only rider to defeat Hall all season long on the track with a race 2 win.  Clark went 2nd both on the day and in the final championship standings, whilst Ben Burridge took the final Crookwood podium spot with third, with Aaran-Lee Hanson gaining third in the series.

Dominic Lancett was in dominant form in the Big Wheel 85 class and swept to an unbeaten 4 ride maximum for the weekend and championships victory.  His closest rival Kyle Mcnicol couldn’t put in a challenge finishing 4th on the day and 2nd in the series.  Bobby Bruce enjoyed his time at Crookwood with a weekend 2nd overall and 3rd in the championships, with Tom Murphy getting into the mix over the weekend for a Crookwood third.

The only championship title sealed before the weekend was in the Small Wheel 85’s where Alfie Jones had built up an insurmountable lead.  With the pressure off Jones, he kept it consistent, slotting in behind overall winner Charlie Heyman with 4 second places.  Heyman celebrated his weekend overall win by also grabbing third place in the series.  Thomas Harris came third over the weekend but was runner up overall when the points were counted after the 6 rounds.

A huge congratulations to everyone who took part in this fantastic series and for the Team at the MX Nationals for once again putting on an epic championships.
