All FIR and in the BANK for Gethin. WOR Events National Hare Scrambles Round 8 & Finale – Race Report & Results

by adminSeptember 19, 2017

The National Hare scrambles series drew to a superb close last weekend at WOR Events` Firbank venue, set high in the Cumbrian Mountains, as a very strong line up of riders took the track for an epic battle in the challenging muddy conditions. The track was an open moorland mix of climbs, drops, twists and turns, bogs, rocky sections etc, everything you need for proper old school scrambles on a dirt bike.

Gethin Humphreys on his 250f Sherco is a formidable rider, fit as anyone out there, strong as an ox, and more determined than you can believe, you always have to consider him a possible winner if his name is on the start list, this race was no different as he set the pace from the off to take a superb overall last round win. Gethin did not have it all his own way though, as early on, George Birchall the likeable 21-year-old Notts based rider blasted his KTM round the track following the rut marks of Gethin and giving him a real race. It was only around the 45-minute mark that Gethin could start putting the hammer down and finally make a break to eventually put 5 and a half minutes advantage between him and Birchall, both riders on 16 laps as was 3rd placed, Sean Eckersley, Ekers doing brilliant to ease a very sick KTM for an hour round the demanding track at the same pace as the top two and secure that podium place in the Experts and overall. Connor Bolsover (CF Racing /WOR Husky) was 5th in class but did enough to secure the NHS Expert crown for the season, his first as an Expert, a superb finish for the unassuming young man that has impressed a lot of people this season with his riding and persona. Well done Conrod.

Top Expert Vet on the lake district course was, as Expected as soon as you see his name in the entry list, Juan Knight. Knight was his usual unflappable, casual and calm self, floating around the track like it was not even there, his GasGas 3002t sounding awesome as he cruised the bogs and hilly sections. Runner Up to Knight was WOR Hare Scrambles legend, Lincoln Brewster a lap down on Knight on 14 laps but a lap up on his old Rival, GG UK importer and race comeback kid, John Shirt Jnr in 3rd spot a real, proper old school podium there of Proper racers.

Young Robert Francom on his 300 Husqvarna really does improve with every ride and has a very nice, smooth and fast style about his riding. Robert calmly chased down the Clubman leader throughout the duration of the race and with a lap to go slammed past Paul Engerlen to take a very well-deserved win in that group. Paul managed to hold on to the Runners Up spot and in doing so secured himself the Overall Clubman champion status for the series, well done to Engerlen as he once again showed his class and consistency. Third on the day in the Clubman class was Ben Haycock with a robust performance and he was an early leader too. Francom secured 2nd overall and Wayne Williams took the 3rd spot in the series.

Clubman Vets was topped on the day by David Williams on 13 laps and Stacey Greensall in second place on 12 laps. 3rd went to Les Pole. Greensall was there to just get a finish and wrap up his Overall group win, Riding to a good standard all year, the determined Greensall has upped his game to be able to go well in all conditions and all kinds of terrain to achieve his well-deserved championship win.

In the Over 50’s It was Andrew Maben and Stephen Parry, in that order, that secured the top two places on the day with both riders achieving 10 laps. 3rd placed Over 50 going to Local man and Stalwart of the Westmoorland Mc Club, Steve Dent.

Mattais Svensson has upped his pace in the Sportsman in the last few events and topped the group on this occasion to complete 11 laps as did Thomas Lawton to be 1st and 2nd on the day. 3rd spot going to the always there or thereabouts, Steve Farthing. The Sportsman championship went down to the wire with the eventual honours after the wild card scores were thrown in the mix going to Svensson with Farthing as series Runner Up and Liam Bellfield a sold 3rd even after missing some races recently with a nasty injury to his fingers.

James Cooke Thomas won the Sportsman Vets on the day at Firbank from Runner Up, Mark Barrow, and also did enough to take the series title from Anthony Foulkes with both riders tied on points and overall series wins, meaning the series championship going to Cooke Thomas courtesy of a last round win and Foulkes 3rd place final day finish.…Tough stuff.

Haydn Tyrer and Haydn Rainford finished 1st and 2nd on the day and also that way in the series after 8 rounds and a wildcard with Sion Hughes taking the 3rd place in the series after missing a few rounds. 3rd on the day went to Percy Johnstone, a local rider loving his play on the local mountains.

Finally, in the Novice class it was a win for the series Novice champ, Dan Griffiths as he Managed a 3-minute advantage over Runner Up, Will Bates. Bates has fallen into a proper rhythm now his new 125 Husky and looks to be a rider to keep an eye out for as he pushed his Dad, Adam Bates into 3rd spot on the day, even with Young Bates battling on with 2 punctures. Adam secured the Runners up spot overall for the series with the consistent and strong Wayne Brennan securing the 3rd spot for the year.

It has been a superb season of 8 races plus the Wildcard round for the NHS series in association with MICHELIN and PUTOLINE and WOR have certainly delivered quality, class leading venues and organisation, to go with a great paddock and pits atmosphere and a general good vibe at all of the family friendly events.

The presentation night at a nice Country hotel in Mold in late October will be a fitting end to this superb National Hare Scrambles enduro series.

Steve Ireland and WOR Events as always would like to thank all involved in running these events and races with massive thanks going out to landowners, staff, medics, sponsors, caterers but most of all the riders that have supported the events and without whom they simply would not take place.

WOR now move into the autumn with some big, sold out Extreme Enduros and then the always popular Winter series starts in November.
